Hello! I wanted to post a brief testimonial about how helpful this community has been! I’m sort of new to using Captivate and accessing the Adobe community. I’ve been a librarian for years and produced many digital learning objects, but it is truly encouraging to have access to your training videos, projects, tips, examples, etc. Thank you truly!

You may have seen that I am quite involved with Captivate since over a decade. My discovery of Captivate (early twenty-first century) has allowed me to apply innovative educational methods in university college where I was professor and head of department at that moment.

The reason I mentioned the other Adobe applications was that they are excellent for assets needed in Captivate. Contrary to most Adobe users, applications like PS, AI, AU, Animate, AE, PP and mobile apps like Capture, Spark are serving Captivate which is my main application. Some examples:

  • Bitmap images: best practice in Captivate is to use the image in the needed resolution (avoid resizing in Captivate because the file size will not decrease). Photoshop is excellent for that goal, and the roundtripping with PS is amazing in Captivate. Have published a blog here if you want to read.
  • SVGs: vector images have a lot of advantages especially for responsive and rescalable projects. Illustrator allows you to extract quickly assets from a vector image to be used in Captivate (even as clickable object). Have several blogs about that as well.
  • Audio is very important in eLearning. You probably will not have the budget to hire professional voice over artists. With a decent headset or USB mike you can create VO (you have already the tone of a teacher), but the audio will probably need some ‘fixing’. I use the roundtripping with AU for all audio clips: noise reduction, normalizing, trimming, healing. That doesn’t take too long but increases the quality considerably. Bad audio is less tolerated by learners than fuzzy images or even typos.
  • Limited animations can be created in Captivate (Effects) but for some topics that is not sufficient. In that case I will go to Animate and create an OAM.  Too bad that synchronizing with Captivate’s Timeline is not yet available. Maybe in a future release?

Camtasia is probably the best video capture tool. You can import the mp4 in Captivate and eventually convert to interactive video. Personally I prefer Video Demo included with Captivate for its easier integration, but it is more limited than Camtasia.

These are great suggestions, Lieve Weymeis! I will definitely be taking you up on your blog posts (and these tools). My plan is to get much better with practice and guidance. Thanks so much!

You’re welcome! One thing is guaranteed: you will never be bored with Captivate. Even after more than 15 years I still enjoy using that application and occasionally discover new workflows.

Welcome to this community! I hope you enjoy exploring Captivate and its many features, including collaboration with Captivate Prime and the other Adobe applications. Do you use some applications from the Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition….)? Or maybe some mobile apps? I love Capture on my phone to collect assets when walking.

Thanks, Lieve Weymeis!

I have access to the Creative Cloud, but I’m trying to create exclusively in Captivate (and Camtasia) in order to help my students. I will check out Capture soon. It looks fantastic. Cheers!
