7 Responsive Design Secrets
December 19, 2016
I’ve been an eLearning designer and developer since 2005, specializing in the creation of interactive and engaging learning experiences. In 2015, I launched my own eLearning design business and began producing Adobe Captivate video tutorials on my YouTube channel, CaptivateTeacher, to support clients and fellow developers. This content not only helped me grow my business globally—it also introduced me to a wider community of aspiring Captivate users who now turn to me for training and mentorship. Today, I provide both online and onsite Adobe Captivate training, empowering others to build effective eLearning with confidence. I’m proud to be part of the Adobe eLearning Community, sharing knowledge, collaborating with other developers, and contributing to the growth of this platform.

This video talks about how to design with responsive design in Adobe Captivate. Since the creation of this video, I have changed my mind about a few points. For example, I think there are cases where using fixed pixels is appropriate, such as when you create an interface object like a button. Having that object setup with a fixed number of pixels makes sense because regardless of your screen size, you finger remains the same size.

Here is a list of tips that I keep in the back of my mind when working with responsive design

Responsive Design Secret Tips

  1. Work in Desktop View and work you way down across the breakpoints
  2. Don’t think in pixels but rather think about percentages (unless your objects need to remain the same size across breakpoints)
  3. Don’t use Auto Height or Auto Width
  4. Turn on and use Smart Position.
  5. Use the anchor tools (tophats) to select accurate positioning for all your objects
  6. Use Apply position properties to all views
  7. Use Apply text and text properties to all views

Thanks Jim. I might have to redo this video since so much has changed with fluid boxes.

I watched this video when it was first published. Consider it the definitive primer when transitioning from fixed design.

Great video. This sums up what I have learnt from experience about smart positioning rather neatly.
