I would like to put a question out there in regards to future trends in Instructional Design

When it comes to Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, do you think will soon become adopted by more L & D departments?

Would you separate AR from VR in terms of adoption rate and maturity?

Do you believe that these technologies would be most useful in training only, or assessment as well?

Many thanks,

Socrates

I don’t have a crystal ball, so this may be totally meaningless.

The question will be answered very differently depending on the location and the budget you have. When I feel the reluctance to spend lot of money on learning in many companies and certainly in formal education I wonder whether that type of innovation will be used intensively in the near future. Viewing the (low) level of a lot of eLearning courses at this moment, it could just be used once in a while for its ‘hype’ value, but not really contribute to the effectiveness of learning.

Do not tell me that I am a person afraid of innovations. During my career as university professor I was often blamed for introducing methods that were ‘too much ahead of our time’…. My first priority is still to make learning as effective and engaging as possible. It is not just adding a 360 video or image that will make that happen just like that. Even if you have unlimited budget.

Totally believe that VR could be a valuable add-on for SOME learning courses.   Same as with gamification,  mobile learning, microlearning and other hype words.  Problem is that those are all only extra tools that are not always used to increase learning, but often just because they are hype.
