Here’s a procedure for converting your high-quality PNG files to SVG images. The advantage of SVGs is that they are relatively small in file size but they are also vector graphics. What that means is that SVGs look great at any size and they are completely compatible with Adobe Captivate.
Photoshop is a lot more popular than Illustrator (look at the successful Photography license). I will use Illustrator if I have a vector file to start with, from which I want to create SVG assets. That is what I used for all the games I have published recently, starting from a free or Stock vector file<
I just tried to do the same thing with Photoshop and wasn’t happy with the process or the results. In the end, I wasn’t able to select sections of the SVG to recolour them in Captivate when I used Photoshop. Besides, almost everyone who uses Photoshop has access to Illustrator as well.
There are multiple ways in PS, don’t know which process you took.
Your environment may be different but I mentioned that PS is much more popular for two reasons:
- The cheap Photography plan is very well spread in Europe, which means lot of freelancers and companies do not have a full CC plan.
- When trainees ask me for a supplementary training in a graphics application, or when I am contacted directly for such a training, about 90% percent of them ask for PS training over AI, even after I explained their goal and the importance of AI for mobile development.
Bit off topic: the ideal application would have been Fireworks, because it handled both vector and bitmap images and was much easier for occasional users. Too bad, Adobe killed it, same as the wonderful Edge applications.
