Captivate 2019 quiz erratic after converting to html5

Our company paid a vendor to make several eLearning courses for us, six or more years ago. They used captivate. I have been using captivate for years. We received the project files from the vendor when our contract ended. I needed to republish to html5 last year or so. I opened the captivate project file in Captivate 2019, removed the .SWF elements, and published to html5 in 2021. All went fine for a while.

However, now we are see many students experiencing issues with the final quiz. The quiz will move to the next slide, even before the student clicks the ‘Submit’ button, sometimes the question won’t report correct or incorrect even after clicking the ‘Submit’ button, etc. I am wondering if something got “messed up” during the converting to html5. I tried republishing several times, with no luck. I’m wondering if I need to delete all the quiz questions and results slide and “re-add” the quiz questions fresh. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. BTW, the courses are proprietary to my company and pretty large (105M). Are there any size limits for uploading project files so you can look them over? Are there any safeguards (in Adobe) regarding me uploading proprietary courses?

Hmm, I don’t know what is happening because I got a notification that you answered to my suggestions (which is VERY rare in this platform). When looking at this thread, your answer is missing?  Too bad, wanted to express my appreciation to be unique in coming back to look for answers, and continue the ‘discussion’ as questions are labeled that way.

Hello Lieve,

Thanks for responding. I appreciate your help and expertise. I am resending my post not that this post is active again. I am sorry it is long.

I read through (twice) your 5 posts regarding captivate quizzes. Thank you for all the great information.

I made the changes to the settings and quizzes you recommended in the posts.

As I read through the posts, I wrote down (below) all the settings that are in my course (and the settings I changed).

I will republish the course, and hope that no more users call in with problems with the quiz (quiz will move to the next slide even before the student clicks the ‘Submit’ button, quiz freezes, sometimes the question won’t report correct or incorrect feedback even after clicking the ‘Submit’ button, etc.).

The issues did not happen to everyone, so I won’t know for a while if it worked or not.

If there is anything else you think I should try, let me know.

Thank you so much for helping people on this forum.

DETAILS:

General description of final quiz:

  • T/F, multiple choice single answer, multiple choice multiple answer questions only.
  • No custom added actions, objects, or system variables.
  • I moved the pause point (on each quiz question) to be close to the end of the timeline.
  • No question pool
  • No remediation
  • No pretest
  • This is not a ‘responsive’ course
  • There are a few Knowledge Check questions embedded within the content, They were marked as ‘Report Answers.’ I turned reporting off.
  • Graded final quiz
  • 10pt score, no penalty (for each question)
  • 1 attempt
  • Actions Success/Last Attempt set to ‘Continue’ should I change them to Go to next slide?
  • 1 Failure message
  • Reporting turned on
  • FYI, I switched to Expert UI so that both the Quiz Properties and the Properties panel are visible.
  • I dragged the ‘Retake’ button on top of the ‘Review’ button on the ‘Results’ master slide.
    • I did not see anything else in the posts regarding what I should change in the quiz masters.

Global Quiz preferences settings specifics (Note: only the items listed are ‘turned on’)

  • Reporting:
    • Enable reporting
    • SCORM 2004 3rd edition
    • Completion and Success criteria: quiz is passed
    • Data to Report: Interaction data
  • Settings:
    • Required: I changed to ‘Optional – The user can skip this quiz’ (was ‘Required’)
    • Review Mode Navigation Buttons
    • Note: ‘Allow Backward Movement’ is turned off.
    • Show Score at the End of the Quiz
    • Quiz Result Messages:
      • Pass message: “Congratulations, you passed the quiz! Click Forward to continue.”
      • Fail message: “Sorry, you did not pass the quiz! Click the Retake Quiz button to try again. You need to score 80% to pass.”
      • Score; Score, Max Score, Accuracy, Quiz Attempts.
    • Allow User to Review the Quiz
    • I turned on ‘Hide Playbar in Quiz’ (was off).
  • Pass or Fail
    • Pass/Fail options: 80% to pass
    • If Passing grade: Action: Continue
    • If Failing grade: Infinite Attempts, and Show Retake Button
    • Default Labels (no changes were made)

Slide Quiz property settings specifics

  • Type: Graded
  • Captions: Correct and Incorrect selected.
  • Buttons: Clear
  • Actions:
    • On Success: Continue
    • No. of Attempts: 1 (I assume this does not conflict with the ‘Preferences’ set to ‘Infinite’?).
    • Failure Messages: 1
    • Last Attempt: Continue
  • Reporting: Report Answers

Quiz Result Slide specifics

  • ‘Display’ items selected in properties window: Score, Max Score, Correct Questions, Total Questions, Accuracy, Quiz Attempts
  • It has a ‘Continue’ and a ‘Review Quiz’ button to the right, not on the slide itself. This course instructs students to click ‘Forward’ button to continue. I don’t know why they moved the ‘Continue’ button off the screen or how they enabled the ‘Forward’ button to submit the Pass or Fail result.
  • The Quiz results slide has 4 items in the timeline
    • A clear smart shape, with a pause (on top of the blue ‘Retake Quiz’ button)
    • A text caption (on top of the blue button for the words ‘Retake Quiz’)
    • A smart shape for the blue button itself
    • A timeline item for the slide itself, with a pause.

I did answer the few questions left in this thread near midnight yesterday, but it has disappeared (again). My apologies, will try once more.

You did apply most of my recommendations, thanks.

You don’t need to change the actions to ‘Go to Next Slide’, because you already moved the pausing point of the quiz slide near the end. The remaining duration is very short and the learner will probably not even be aware of a waiting time. I recommend this solution because in the past I had issues with ‘Go to Next Slide’ when multiple learners were taking an assessment in college and some results were not transferred due to an older switch.

There is no conflict between the number of attempts on question and on quiz level. You may find time to re-read my blog post about scores and attempts.

You last comments about the Quiz Results slide make me worry howeveer. Why would you need to have shape button on top of the Retake Quiz button? It makes no sense, Retake button is an embedded objects. Pausing of the Results slide is normally taken care off by the Continue button. Do not take it out of the slide by moving it into the scratch area. You can edit its colors to make it virtually invisible, but it better remain on the slide because it has as much functionality built in as the Submit button on question slides.  If you want the Review button to remain invisible until Pass has been achieved, hide it below the real Retake button. Let me know if you need more information, there is also a Tweak blog about Results slides in this platform.

FYI I am just a user, spending some (chuckling) time to try to help other Captivate users. Most consultancy jobs I got were linked somehow with Quizzes not working as expected and fixing those bugs. Blogs about quizzes on my blogsite get a lot of views, probably for the same reason.

I wouldn’t have mentioned the name of the developer, after all this is a public forum. My first guess is that the master slides in the used theme have been messed up, because that happens a lot. Moreover since you talk about rather old courses and theme use has become even more important in the most recent versions and for HTML output. Replacing the original question slides with new ones (please use GIFT or CSV import) will not solve a possible theme problem at all.

It is only a first guess. I suspect you have non-responsive projects, because responsive projects (Breakpoints or Fluid Boxes method) are even more sensitive. You can find some ideas in this post:

Thank you very much Lieve for responding. I have seen your helpful advice on these discussions for years and I appreciate your response. Good advice to leave the name of the developer off. I should have known that, thanks. Thanks for mentioning replacing quiz questions may not fix it. I will read the info on your link try the suggestions. BTW, you are correct, these are non-responsive courses. Thanks.
