Capturing without a license?
December 7, 2022

My organization has numerous licenses for Course Developers & Instructional Designers; however, we generally have subject matter experts capture the simulations and then hand the content over to the CD/ID to clean up, author, test, and publish. The issue we’re running into is that we have ~100 CDs/IDs with full licenses however we have ~4000 SMEs.  Is there a workaround where the SME can capture content without their own license? A Capture only option? A free trial license will work once, but not a second time for the same SME.

AFAIK such a version is not existing. Wait, will try to offer tips to circumvent.

Captivate has two ways to create software simulations:

  • Traditional slide based capturing, which is possible in 3 modes: Demo, Assessment, Training. Since you talk about SMEs I suspect you are pointing only to Demo mode?
It could be replaced by offering the SMEs to capture still screenshots, one for each step (click/typing) in a specific resolution. That can be done even with free tools or with a cheap tool like Snagit. It is up to the ID in that case to get all the still screenshots in the Project Library as Backgrounds and add the necessary Captivate features.
Problem here are the so-called ‘Full Motion Recording’ slides, which would need a video recording. Having them as MP4 would be great, not sure if this is possible to explain?
  • Video Demo: only possible for Demo simulations and leads to passive video. I wonder if you are also looking for a workaround or even if you have that solution in mind?
