Custom playbar for video inserted on slide
(3)

I’m looking for a way to add a custom playbar with specific controls to video inserted on a slide in Captivate 2019. The playbar should include Play/Pause/Stop/Mute/CC. Inserting a video as an event video gives the ability to use one of Captivates skins for the playbar, but I don’t see a skin that doesn’t include a scrubber. The learner will need to watch the video before proceeding to the next slide. Also, we’d need closed captions added to the videos. I found some information online that says it isn’t possible to add captions to event videos, but there is a hack using Camtasia.

I’m a new Captivate user, and I tried adding custom buttons following a video by Paul Wilson, but the buttons disappear once the video begins. Googling this issue, it seems like this is due to fluid boxes. The project is a template that was sent to me and it includes placeholders to insert videos on each slide, so there isn’t much I can edit.

The project does not include use of the Captivate playbar for the project. There are interactions on the page and forward and back buttons used to navigate through each page. This project will then be published to scorm and imported to LMS.

I have javascript and css (styles for the buttons and player) for an HTML5 player that I can share, but I don’t know how or if it’s possible to import this to a Captivate project.

I’ve been following videos and information from Adobe Help, but nothing is working. Is this even possible? If so, can you point me to examples/directions/tips that will help?

Thanks for appreciating my blog, although due to the amount of posts it is not always easy to find exactly what you are looking for. I have some summary articles in this platform having links to all posts about a specific topic. Search for Quiz Resources (needs another update), Timeline Resources and Theme Resources. Fluid Boxes are another topic which IMO should only be addressed when the basic workflows in non-responsive projects are mastered. Not everyone agrees with that viewpoint, but I have been delivering lot of trainings for Captivate (and multiple other applications).

You are indeed stuck with that ‘template’, hope it has at least a proper custom theme. You will need to insert the slide video on a slide without fluid boxes, using the workflow I described in that other blog post, taking advantage of the Position Properties. Only way AFAIK.

Lot of questions, and since you are new to Captivate it will be tough to understand my answer.

First of all: you have a ‘template’ but I hope it is a standard cptx file, not a cptl file which is pretty buggy.

Moreover if I understand correctly this is a Fluid Boxes project which makes the situation even more complicated. It is impossible to insert a slide video in a fluid box, only event videos are supported.

I have several tutorials, but not passive video for the creation of buttons. However you first need to understand how to insert slide video in a Fluid Boxes project. This blog post explains the workflow, I fear it may be rather hard to understand for a new Captivate user, but give it a try:

Do not be confused by the title, any slide video can be an interactive video, but it is not compulsory.

Thank you for responding! I’ve actually been reading your tutorials and followed the steps in the play/pause toggle tutorial. I am new to Captivate and have been hunkered down all week learning. Your tutorials have helped me tremendously. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I was able to create a rewind/pause/play/mute/volume button using advanced actions, but as you mentioned above, the fluid boxes are making it complicated. The template (cptx) was designed and then handed off. I had initially built an html5 video player with custom controls thinking I could import the assets. The issue I’m running into now is the video wasn’t inserted within one of the fluid boxes and thus doesn’t work correctly when viewed on any resolution different than 1920×1080. The controls are not positioned with the player when changing screen size

I’ll review the tutorial you created and see what I can figure out.
