How to Insert Question Slides in Adobe Captivate

Before adding question slides, it’s a good idea to set some basic Quiz Preferences to control quiz navigation and Pass/Fail options.

  1. Go to Quiz > Quiz Preferences.
    Quiz Menu
  2. In the categories, click Quiz Settings, then:
    1. Name the quiz and select what will be Required.
    2. Select the Settings. When Review Mode Navigation Buttons is on, Next, Back, and Submit buttons will appear on each slide. If the quiz taker were to answer a question and click Next, waiting until the end of the quiz to click Submit, all of the previous questions would be marked as unanswered and therefore scored as incorrect. The Submit All option allows the learner to go to the next question and click Submit All answer at the end of the quiz. If the learner were to click Next on the last question, they would be prompted to click Submit All.
    3. Show score at End of the Quiz automatically adds a results slide. Allow User to Review the Quiz lets learners go back to see how they answered the questions.
      Quiz Settings
  3. Go back to the categories and click Quiz Pass or Fail to set the Pass/Fail grade. Setting Action for Passing Grade and Failing Grade allows you to take the learner to one destination with a passing grade and another destination if they fail, for instance.

  4. After you click OK, you’ll see a quiz results slide has been inserted. Drag the results slide to the end of slidesin the Filmstrip, if needed.

  5. Go to the slide before the results slide, then go to Quiz > Question Slide.
    Quiz Menu
  6. There are nine types of questions in Captivate: Multiple Choice, True/False, Fill-in-the-Blank, Short Answer, Matching, Hot Spot, Sequence, Rating Scale (Likert), and Random Question. Each type can be graded except for Rating Scale (Likert), which is used for survey questions. Check the types of questions you want and the number for each type, then click OK.

  7. You’ll see that there’s now a Quiz Inspector in with the Properties and Timing Inspector where you can change the settings, such as number of multiple choice answers, points assigned, and penalties for each question slide.

  8. The question slides have fields for you to type in the question and, depending on question type, answers. The answer fields also have radio buttons for designating the correct answers. Here’s a multiple choice question shown with it’s properties:

I don’t want to cause frustrations but I really need to warn other users because some of your screenshots will cause problems for them. Lot of information is lacking as well, but I will not point at this.

  1. The change of the option in the Required field to ‘Answer all…’ for sure will cause problems when used in the majority of LMSs. This claim is based on lot of consultancy jobs and answering questions about Captivate in all social media since 2009. Avoid that very strict option but make sure that this is achieved in a more gentle way: Hide Playbar in Quiz and unchecking Skip will achieve this as well without forementioned problems.
  2. You don’t talk about the consequences of choosing for ‘Submit All’! That is dangerous as well. If the learner leaves the session without completion of the quiz he/she will lose all the work done.
  3. The meaning of the actions in Pass/Fail setting: if you are not sure about the LMS it is much better to keep the default setting at ‘Continue’ and eventually move the pausing point on the score slide more towards the end. Much more important is to have at least one slide after the score slide so that transfer of the data to the LMS is ensured.
  4. Since you choose ‘Submit All’ most of the other screenshot lost their significance. However why do you not even mention the Reporting part which is essential to create a SCORM compliant module?

I don’t mind if you want to blame me, but 90% of my debugging jobs are linked to lack of understanding of Captivate’s quizzing features. It is also the reason I have written around 50 blog posts about that topic. Please do not post confusing information.
