Text Entry Box character limit

I am working on an application simulation and the application requires the learner to enter a 19 character number. I have a TEB on the slide and validate the input before it advances to the next slide.

When I preview the project in an HTML browser the text entered in the text entry box displays correctly. However when I navigate back to the slide the data displays the first 15 characters I entered but character 16-19 display as 0000. Now I put a text caption on the slide to show the text entry variable as I am typing. The text caption shows the first 15 characters as I enter them but then displays 0000 for 16-19 even though I entered 2201.

But what is even stranger, if I preview the next 5 slides the project works as programed, displaying the characters I enter in the text entry variable name and when I return back the text entry variable displays the correct 19 characters as entered.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the response. I am on Captivate 2019 11.5.0.476.

We do application training and have successfully used TEB’s for several years and works well for us. This is the first time we have had a learner input with a string this long.

Any reason why you don’t update to 11.5.5.553? It is much more stable release with less bugs than the 11.5 version you are using. You didn’t answer my question about the score?  So far I never experienced a limit to the number of characters in a TEB.

No I am not reporting the score to the LMS. I am on a government contract and they do not allow updates to software so I do not have any say in this matter. I was hoping there was a setting/preference which I could increase the character limit. Does not appear to be. I think I am going to change the course to state the on screen avatar will enter the data for them.

That would be a pity, to lose that interaction. As I mentioned, I never experienced that type of limit with the TEB, but your version was really buggy. The one I mentioned has been releases rather quickly after yours to fix the bugs. And that is already years ago, not months. Being stuck with a buggy version is bad.

At this moment we have simultaneously two Captivate versions around, but I suspect – due to your terminology –  that you are not on version 12? Can you confirm, you find the full version number under Help, About Captivate.

Text Entry Boxes can be tricky. Do you need to report the score for the interactivities in the simulation? If not, I would prefer to replace the TEB by a scrolling text interaction. It can have an associated variable and has less limitations. But it cannot be set to Reporting a score like is the case for a TEB.

Have a look at:
