You demonstrated how to disable the “Proceed” button at the beginning of the slide. However, the Next button on the player remains active, allowing users to skip ahead to the next slide.
It would be more helpful if you could also explain how to disable the player’s Next button until the required interaction is completed, and how to restrict the Table of Contents (TOC) so that users can only access each slide after completing the previous one.
In Adobe Captivate, you can’t directly disable the “Next” button on the player slide-by-slide. However, there’s a smart workaround — you can hide the entire playbar (which includes the Next button and TOC) on specific slides and show it again when needed. This helps enforce navigation control where required.
Here’s how to do it:
How to Hide the Playbar to Restrict Navigation:
Step 1: Hide the playbar at the beginning of the slide
- Select the slide where you want to restrict navigation.
- Go to the Interactions panel.
- Click Add Interaction.
- Under Timeline Triggers, choose Slide Enter.
- In the Action panel, click More.
- From the dropdown, scroll down and select Hide Playbar.
- Click Done.
How to Show the Playbar Again at the End of the Slide:
Step 2: Add a bookmark at the end of the slide
- On the Timeline, move to the end of the slide.
- Add a bookmark by clicking the plus (+) icon.
- Rename the bookmark to something logical like “end”.
Step 3: Show the playbar when the bookmark is reached
- In the Bookmarks section, add a new action on the “end” bookmark.
- Select an action
- Again, click More in the Action panel.
- Scroll down and choose Show Playbar.
- Click Done.
This way, the playbar (and the Next button) stays hidden until the learner finishes the interaction or reaches the end of the slide. It’s a simple and effective method to guide the learner through your course in the right order.

Hi Shobhana,
I am having a similar issue and just tried this strategy. However, this then creates the issue of users not being able to pause the video they are watching. How do you recommend I allow users to be able to pause a video when they need, but also not be able to skip before finishing the video?
Hi Emily
The above steps help control navigation while ensuring learners follow the intended sequence.
However, we understand that hiding the playbar also removes the pause functionality, which can be an issue for video content. To address this issue, you can follow the given workaround:
- Open the slide where you want to control navigation.
- In the left panel, choose Add Media Blocks.
- Select the Video option (the one that appears like a grid).
- Insert/select your video on the slide.
- With the video selected, open the Properties Inspector (right panel).
- In the Properties Inspector, set Number of Videos to 1.
Result: the video will have its own separate playbar with Play/Pause controls, so learners can pause the video when needed while you keep the course playbar hidden to prevent skipping.
Let me know in case you have any questions.
