We had a great turnout for last week’s eSeminar on Scenario-Based / Soft-Skills training with Adobe Captivate. The biggest lesson, we probably need 3 hours to go over everything. But we got off to a wonderful start and had a great time doing it.

There were no slides for this weeks session, instead I dove right in after a brief explanation of the perils of unrestrained branching in narratives. Game developers learned long ago that there is an inherent hazard in trying to create a scenario that branches to new content at every junction, so I talked about how you can leverage what they learned in order to minimize the need for massive amounts of content creation that will likely not be viewed by most of your learners.
We spent the bulk of the time looking at how the sample soft skills training was actually built in Adobe Captivate. Curious? Have a look at the session, and consider joining us for future sessions where I’ll look more deeply at the scripts used here, and at potential alternatives.
For those who like to collect things; here’s the list of scenario exposition basics I gave in the session:
Setting it up
1. the stakes and who we’ll be ‘playing’
2. bio of our character (can be short or skipped)
3. bio of the person with whom we will interact (can be visual or simple)
4. the context (where are we, what’s the event going to be about)
5. our expert(s) – who will help us / give guidance
6. our goal
7. our obstacle(s)
