Dynamic text for buttons… Drawing Shapes + Click boxes way!

It is very common to allow the users to navigate to a different screen if they would like to read more on a particular topic. When we create such screens, being smart in navigation and letting the learners know which screen they came from becomes very important. If the learner is clicking ‘Read more’ from Screen A and lands in Screen B, it becomes helpful for the users to know that they will go back to Screen A when they click on ‘Go to last slide visited’ button. Our Community Expert Lieve Weymeis has posted an answer at the Adobe Captivate Forum on how to solve this… Thanks Lieve 🙂

Check out the example to take a look at it…

How do we do this?

Before we begin, let me tell you that there are various paths to approach this and the path I’m taking is a combination of Drawing Objects, Click Boxes and Variables. The logic used here is that on every slide enter action, we assign the text to a variable and display that text as button text. Wait… did I say button text? Yes, I meant the button that we have simulated using the Drawing Shape and Click Box… again… there are multiple ways to do this and this is one of them. View the following demo to learn more on this.

Hope this helps. Please let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment here.

Awesome video! I was able to do this; however, I don’t know how to do it with multiple click boxes on one slide. I want to be able to navigate to different slides from this one slide. Any help?

I am teaching myself capivate while taking a CBT course. This was fantastic. I could not figure how to make nice looking navigation buttons that would manuver to each page and be alike in positon action and colors. Thanks.

Its nice that Captivate enable users to easily program their presentations for navigation. But not every user is a programmer and familiar with variables.

Hello Usama,

Thanks for your feedback. It’s very easy to use the variables. Whatever is shown in the demo are the only steps you need to do to use the variables. Please let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks,
Vish
