I’m not sure this qualifies as a case study but I think this is something different than just a blog post. I remember my initial thoughts about the badges on the Adobe eLearning Community. My first thought was “who cares how much I have contributed to the eLearning community?”
When the site finally launched I saw I was listed as a Newbie. What!?! I instantly felt like I had been robbed of my status within the Adobe Captivate Community. Obviously the badges work. Since then I have been vindicated and have worked my way up to Wizard status (just in time for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). It’s funny how a little bruised ego can incentivise me and take advantage of my very real competitive nature.
Recently I have had several people asking me if they could become an intern or if I could mentor them with their career in eLearning. Honestly, I’m just a regular eLearning designer developer who just happens to have a YouTube channel that some of you subscribe to. The rest of you are probably wondering “who is this guy?”

Anyway, I think there is a better way for you to get some very real world experience that you can put on your résumé and become an Adobe eLearning Master in 90 days. First thing I want you to do is to look at the incentive levels the folks at Adobe have come up with for the badges:
https://elearning.adobe.com/levels/
For example, if you write a blog post about Adobe eLearning products you gain 100 points. If you write four more blog posts you will have 500 points. That puts you at Master. If you take a look at the incentive for Master, it includes 3 months of complimentary license usage for Adobe Captivate, Adobe Presenter Video Express and Adobe Captivate Prime. You also would potentially be invited to host an Adobe Live Webinar.
I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly trying to build my reputation within the eLearning community. Of course I started years ago before there was an Adobe eLearning Community site where it’s all laid out for you. Between the trial versions of the software, this community extending that for up to three months and the potential of being invited to host a live event, well that sounds like a pretty good start toward building that reputation as an Adobe eLearning Master.
Who knows, maybe you could one day be a Wizard or even a Legend and get invited to speak at an Adobe live event somewhere in the world. In either case, I think all of this would look pretty good on a résumé.
I’m going to post a testimonial and would be remiss if you weren’t mentioned in it. My entire Captivate levels experience has been due to your video. Trying not to gush but your sharing the power of this community on YouTube was valuable opportunity to help this budding ID professional. Awesome posts here and on your website. Thank you. Again.
Paul, I think you are my jackpot. I had the same feeling recently so I am off to prove the world wrong about my capabilities. Seriously, I love learning even at my age but I also like producing better quality elearning for my customers. We have so much to offer but the speed at which the government works isn’t too conducive to change. So we have to get creative and show them what their members are missing out on.
Thank you for sharing and I think you have given me a roadmap for success. At least my success. Gracias amigo.

Just an update on my own level. With all the blog posts, video submissions and answering and commenting on everyone’s questions I have over 17,000 points on the Adobe eLearning Community and have achieved Legend status. Not to mention I have acquired complimentary software that I didn’t have before. Once again I wish to challenge everyone to participate in the community; not only for the points and the free perks that go along with them but to make this a more inclusive place. Don’t be afraid to put in your own ideas alongside legends. Remember everyone started out a Newbie and a good idea is a good idea regardless of where it came from.
To inspire you, I have written a non-technical blog post where I share an experience from early in my career as an eLearning instructional designer. It was a really great lesson learned that helps me to this very day. Don’t be afraid to share your ideas even if they aren’t technical. There is more to making great eLearning than just knowing the software.
Hi Adam,
This will be taken care of. Usually we update once a month on this. It should reflect the points soon. Leave the points part to me 🙂 you please help us in contributing to motivating content on this platform.
Thanks,

I just wanted to update all of you that I have been able to amass over 16,000 points and achieve the level of Legend. Also thanks to all my YouTube viewers as well. Very soon I will have over 300,000 views and it looks like I will shortly have 4,000 subscribers. Thanks everyone.
Are you going to the Adobe eLearning Conference in Washington DC in April? I’m really hoping I can be there. Last year was great and even though I was presenting a session, I learned so much by sitting in other presenter’s session. Best part of the conference is that it’s free!

I’d love to! I followed the link to the registration page. Would you be willing to provide a brief overview as to what topics/programs were covered? I will need to submit to my manager for approval, and will need to provide rationale for attending. Are there sessions on Captivate 9?
Thanks!
Adam
It’s been 1 week since I posted this blog and I have continued to take my own advice and post as much stuff to the community as I could. Some of my posts were sharing videos that I thought the community could benefit by, other cases were just me doing my best to answer questions. I’ve managed to accumulate over 1000 points in the last week or so. I would love to hear how others have taken the advice in this blog post and turned it into a success story. Please add your comments.
Well, you motivated me to rack up my first 3 points. So, thank you. I’m not much of a “badge guy,” but certainly scoring, for example, 5,000 points at least indicates that one has been exposed to knowledge. I also haven’t had a lot of time for “social media.” Becoming a Wizard or Legend would certainly demonstrate that you can operate effectively in that area, one that is becoming increasingly important.
Hey Mark, Keep in mind that you can accumulate points for fairly passive activities as well. Take a look at all the ways you gain points from just liking this article:
Like an article: 1 point
Comment on an article: 2 points
Share an article: 2 points
In total, that’s 5 points. If you did that for 10 articles you would advance from Newbie to Explorer. I have 8 blog posts. There are forty additional points right there.
Another one of my favourites is submitting a bug or feature request. If you see something that just doesn’t seem right, or you can think of a better way to do things submit it. I can speak from experience that Adobe does listen. For example, Knowledge Checks were my idea. Of course, thousands of others probably had that idea as well. If the eLearning Community was around when I submitted that feature request I would have received 20 points for that alone.
Thanks, Paul! Always good stuff from you! I, too, and trying to heighten my badge credential, but the system doesn’t seem to be awarding the points they should. Namely, I posted an answer which was marked as Correct…should be awarded 10 points, and I submitted a testimonial, which was accepted…should be awarded 50 points. For both, I received nothing. And, not to sound trivial, but I chatted with Adobe, and they said points were all awarded automatically, that that they couldn’t manually do anything. What are my options at this POINT? ~ pun intended! 🙂
Adam
Thanks again, Shambu! I see that my submission was approved! However, it is categorized under Showcase rather than Case Study. Are there descriptions of what the types of submissions are, and what they must include/etc., for future reference?
Also, it appears that my points are once again not accruing/updating.
Thank you!
Adam
Case Study – This is something Adobe team would work with Captivate users in know the challenges & solutions created using our Product. This would bit details discussion done.
Showcase – Where Captivate users can showcase their work created using Adobe Captivate product explaining how they have used the product to create this particular workflow.
Sorry about that, usually it take a 24, 48rhs. You would see it reflecting soon! Points would not be lost at any case, I will assure you.
Thanks,
Shambu
