Key steps from the Captivate 9 read me file:

After the upgrade, before launching Adobe Captivate 9.0.2, do the following steps:

  • Clear your preferences by double clicking on the following file:

    • Windows: C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Captivate 9 x64utilsCleanPreferencesWin.bat
    • Mac OS : /Applications/Adobe Captivate 9/utils/CleanPreferencesMac
  • Ensure that you take a backup of interactions and sample projects folder and delete them.

    • Sample projects folders are present at:
      • Windows: C:UsersPublicPublic DocumentsAdobeeLearning AssetsSampleProjects
      • Mac OS: /Users/<user account>/Documents/My Adobe Captivate Projects/SampleProjects
    • Interactions folders are present at:
      • Windows: C:UsersPublicPublic DocumentsAdobeeLearning AssetsInteractions_9_0
      • Mac OS: /Users/<user account>/Documents/My Adobe Captivate Projects/Interactions_9_0
  • In the upgraded projects, old interactions should be replaced with new interactions.

Note:

Back up existing projects created using older versions of Captivate before opening them with Captivate 9.0.2.

Forgotten in this article is the Layouts folder, which will often have to be deleted as well.
This work flow is also valid for any patch/upgrade
