English is not my native language which may explain why I have problems with several points here. In my mind an animation is something that plays independently of the learner, which means it is not adding to the interactivity at all. It has a fixed duration (unless it loops), I don’t see how this could make the learning time flexible? Those are only some examples which confuse me. What you are talking about is to me valid when you add interactivity.. Animations are only a way to make eLearning more attractive if used wisely. Maybe one exception: if the animation is showing a process (machinery, gear), and if you give the learner control over the animation. It can be my misunderstanding, but animations (SWF or HTML) inserted in Captivate are not interactive unless you use JS in the animation tool to be able to control it in CP.
