Certificates and Awards Make A Big Difference

Over the past number of years, I have created many eLearning courses that have been used by thousands of learners.  At this stage, I never used a certificate or rewards for the courses.  But one day a colleague of mine came to me and said could you give me a certificate for my HACCP course that I completed?  I said sure and created the certificate.  What I did not know was that he was going to a large team meeting and he showed off his certificate with pride.  All good and fine, well that not how it turned out.

Over the next couple of days, I received requests from many of the staff that had completed or attempted to completed courses.  I realised that I could use this to my advantage and started to add the certificate as part of the course.  On completion of the course, the learners would get a certificate automatically.

The results of this little bit of extra work  engagement went way through the roof, courses were being complete ahead of time and staff became more productive.  As a result, they were requesting courses that I had not imagined they would be interested in.

Learners like to be rewarded for their efforts if only on an A4 piece of paper.  It a small gesture that makes them feel that they have accomplished something.  Look at angry birds the app, players are motivated by the higher scores they can achieve and nothing else.

The rise in Completion Rates

The rise in completion rates was outstanding we went from branches that struggled to achieve a 60% completion in xxxx period to full completion a month before the completion date was due.  This lead to the following:

  • Broader Knowledge of Products
  • Full Customer Engagement
  • Higher Sales per Sales Colleague
  • More Opportunity for Promotion Within The Branches / Company
  • Extra Spending Power on Training

So start giving your learners certificates today and see you engagement increase dramatically over the coming months.

Creating Certificates

It’s easy to create certificates in Captivate with the insert interactions.  You just need to select a certificate and modify it to your company details, add a logo and insert.  The learner can then access their certificate once they have completed the modules and quizzes assigned to them.

Do you mean to link certificates directly to the 5 perceived positive outcomes? It seems there would be other contributing factors.  How was this measured?

Simply adding a certificate to the course that is accessible when the learner has completed 100% of the modules and passed the quizzes.

Are you telling them at the beginning of the course that there is a certificate of completion at the end? Otherwise, how would they know in order to lessen the attrition in taking the course?
