Thanks for this – really useful. Is it possible to allow users to turn the text-to-speech audio on/off as required?

If you use the built-in Playback Controls there is an Audio mute button that allows anyone to turn on or off the audio, including text to speech.

Hi Paul,

I’ve been using the guide ever since I’ve watched your video. And I also thought I’ve already figured out what the labels PARENTS and CHILDREN stand for. Seems I’m wrong Can you clarify these two concepts? Thanks!

Most markup languages have items that are parent and child level tags or syntax — child-level tags inherent parent level properties. For example, consider the following VTML code.

The pitch value is a parent level tag whereas the parts of speech tag is a child level tag. In other words, the parts of speech tag inherit the parent level pitch values. It really isn’t something to think about too often but the relationship does exist.

Thanks Paul! Although I’ve noticed that the TTS feature of Captivate has already evolved esp. where the <vtml_partofsp part=”xxx”> is concerned, I still find  the VTML doc helpful, esp the break tags; makes the audio sound more natural 🙂

This is brilliant and so easy to do. I thought I was going to have to go and find a recording studio and record the transcript at great expense. Dropping in text like this has sped up development time no end and makes it part of the captivate piece rather than having to use premiere to add audio and hope that it fitted. Thanks Paul, If you are ever in the UK, I’ll buy you a pint.

I also have good experience with Amazon Polly.

That VTML User’s Guide is awesome. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered that before.

It is helpful. When I do use text to speech I refer to it often. For example, <vtml_sayas interpret-as=”vxml:currency”>1,900,000</vtml_sayas>

Thanks for sharing! I appreciated your comments on how you write differently for text to speech.  I don’t use text to speech very often but I will keep that in mind next time I do. I hope they continue to improve text to speech so it sounds less “robotic” which is the complaint I usually get.

I’ve also used Amazon Polly as well. Can’t run it directly from within Captivate but it gives you a different result. Some might even say better. Eventually, they all fail to sound 100% natural.
