I like to think of this new feature as the format painter for Adobe Captivate. In this video tutorial, I show you how the new Copy and Paste Appearance feature works in Adobe Captivate 2019 Update 2.
Please note that videos such as this one were prepared in advance using the prerelease version of Adobe Captivate Update 2. There might be subtle differences in the appearance or functionality of the final publicly available software.

I only use it as explained in my blog, to copy text styles from one text object to another without touching the rest of the object style. Very useful in that case. Second use case: to quickly show what a change in style would look to a client, easy to reset the original default style.

Both Format Paineter and copy/paster appearance should be used wisely or it will lead to a lot of wasted hour later on. I have been teaching a lot of MS applications. I use the format painter, but only for short documents, where I don’t expect to have to upgrade them ever. For longer documents, using styles is always to recommend, since updating a style throughout a document is a breeze.
Same in Capitvate: the star to which you copied the appearance has an overridden style. That means that any update to the style of the ball, will not be propagated to the start if such a change has to be done. And every CP developer knows very well that such editing needs arise all the time. Repeat ‘use this feature sparingly and in a wise way’.
Finally caught up to Storyline and Powerpoint with a type of format painter – hmm! That’s why I may avoid using it – just like I avoid using character formatting in InDesign or FrameMaker. Styles are there for a reason – hopefully won’t instill a bunch of bad habits with over ridden styles all over the project – creating formatting nightmares.
David, totally agree. Captivate is object style based. However there are some use cases where copy/paste appearance can be useful, will blog about them. If used wisely as I wrote. However, I have seen already so many overridden styles during consultancy jobs, due to ignorance of the developers. I wonder if this feature can even increase that bad practice which is wide spread.
