Captivate using HDMI to USB DV / DSLR / Camcorder Link – in place of webcam

I have had a problem when attempting to use Camlink which is just one of the many possible solutions which allow you to use a Camcorder / DV Camera, DSLR Camera etc by providing an HDMI to USB capture card.  Camlink is perhaps the most popular one.

The video quality is so far superior using a more professional camera that I cannot ignore it and therefore am forced to use something other than Captivate.

I have used this hardware with other products including Camtasia and Skype however Captivate immediately closes when Video Demo is selected.  I should add that with Camtasia I must also utilize the free software Manycam as the driver for Camlink.  However that done it works perfectly.

I have created a short video which demonstrates the problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTwbThoOOz0

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Thank you.

I don’t have a specific solution for this. However, I wonder if you run Adobe Captivate with Administrator rights if it would work any better. It might be worth trying. Captivate sometimes crashes when it attempts to access elevated resources with only regular user accounts.

No, Paul. Had the discussion about using better cameras with many clients. It is simply not supported…

Cannot really help you, but I know that the same problem existed with Video Xpress, from which the dual recording features was taken. It was clearly meant only to be used with lower-level web cameras, not with professional DSLR cameras.  Personally I do not believe very much in improving learning efficiency by having a ‘talking head’. However, if you want professional results, do not use the simple workflow of Video Demo to capture both the narrator and the screen, but record the narrator in a professional way which my be time-consuming.

Of course, would invite you to log a feature request, not sure many users will follow you in that request but nevertheless worthwhile trying.
