Need SO MUCH help with adobe captivate! Please!
(12)

I have no idea how to make eLearning on Adobe Captivate and I have a very big issue: I cannot make the slides stop so they only advance on command. Instead, they always continue playing and whatever I do, they do not stop even if I have a button for “continue”. Can someone help me, please?! It is my first time using adobe programs by the way

Hi jorge alexandro ATyInc

Here is the solution;

Option 1: Add a very small button to your each slide and change its color to transparent. When you publish your course player will stop till this button click. Pro tip: You can add this button to anywhere out of the slide.

Option 2: There is a setting area that right side on setting panel for each slide which gives you some actions when slide visit. Chose this like ‘Stop Slide’ at the end of the timeline.

Please inform us when you need additional help.

Good luck!

Your first option is very old = outdated and too cumbersome. I already mentioned this workflow which is lot less work

Put a shape button on the main master slide, you can make it invisible by setting Alpha and Stroke to 0. It will automatically pause each slide at its end. Much better solution also than option 2, because the On Exit event (you can only use Pause, not Stop Slide) is not to be trusted.

Forgot to tell that a default button will pause the the slide at 1.5 secs. Any item appearing after that time will never appear, although the slide audio may continue. Not at alla a good idea.

I see. I mostly add shape and then convert it to button and I put it to the end of the timeline or where I want to add. However, adding it to the master slide another great idea. Thank you to share it with us.

Shape button, SVG, bitmap or one of the older button types, doesn’t matter. The pausing point is by default ALWAYS set to 1.5secs. Only for click boxes (end of its timeline) and for shape button, SVG or Bitmap used as button on master slides will the pausing point be always at the end of the timeline of any slide, whatever its duration.

Adobe Captivate is not an application that you can just pick up in an afternoon. Even if Lieve solves your first handful of challenges you will undoubtedly have more. I strongly encourage you to sign up for a proper course on Adobe Captivate and learn all of the basics before being given the task and a deadline for building your first elearning course.

The challenges I mention (not solved) are rarely treated in most basic or even advanced courses.   That is my biggest frustration.  They are only ‘touched’ and quickly skipped over. Many of my trainees complained about that, not only my personal opinion.

Everyone learns in his personal way. I do not agree that sitting for a couple of days in a classroom is the best way for all learners.  I never bought a book, never did go to any training….

I was not endorsing any particular course, just that taking a course, in whatever environment the OP prefers, is far better than poking around and getting frustrated.

Since you are a newbie, maybe this post could help to detect where the biggest stumbling blocks are in Captivate:

Although you seem to confuse a presentation tool with an eLearning tool, you can find an easy way described in a blog for which I will post a link in a separate comment to avoid moderation waiting time.

In short this is the idea:

  • Go to the Master slide panel, and select the Main master
  • Insert a shape, which you make invisible by setting the Alpha (fill) and Stroke both to 0. It may be a very small shape, somewhere at the end of the master slide
  • Convert the shape to a button. It will automatically pause each slide at its end.

Alternative is to select all slides in the filmstrip (CTRL-A) and choose the On Exit event. Replace the command ‘No action’ by ‘Pause’. I do not like that approach for several reasons which I will not elaborate here.
