I work as a graphic design lecturer and I have been working on my Master’s degree research project for more than a year now; I am currently in the final stages. My project involves developing an e-learning website to effectively teach graphic design students about Gestalt principles in a flipped-classroom teaching style. The idea is to have a website that is engaging, accessible, interactive, and easy to use. At the beginning I was planning to code the website myself from scratch as I have a background in web development. Thankfully, my research has brought me to Adobe Captivate which has made my development of the e-learning website more efficiently and I was able to save time. Tons of tutorials on the web provided by the eLearning community are available which has made me learn the software easily from scratch. The main features that I have planned to implement are all possible to do with Captivate; these include: animations, interactive questions with custom drag-and-drop, text to speech, and image buttons functionality. The quiz system allowed me to effectively manage knowledge check (unlimited attempts with no score) and final test (with score- pass or fail) questions. My favorite is the ability to write custom variables and script which provides flexibility that allowed me to use graphics I designed myself as interactive buttons; at the same time, provide advanced logic behind the questions. The research project requires me to test the usability of my eLearning website to students. I have currently developed a basic prototype and have tested it to a couple of students. On the later stages, I will be testing it to more students and conduct survey and interviews. Fortunately, Captivate uses HTML5 and it allows responsive layout. This will make my prototype easily accessible by students as it will run in all modern browsers and devices. So far, Captivate has been great in providing all the tools I need to complete my project. The eLearning community has been very helpful each time I face any doubt. I am looking forward to more Captivate experience as I finish my eLearning website.
