In reading a chapter “Working with Quizzes”, the author said to select Window > Question Pool. Now just about everything about any object that could be in a quiz has all its Quiz panel information grayed out. How can I get out of Question Pool mode–go back to not having a Question Pool?

Close that panel. You probably are in Newbie UI, which I never use. I hope this will work: use Window menu to close it. Then click on any slide in the Filmstrip and you’ll be rid of the question pool. Not a good tutorial if you are stuck like this.
