Sound Files are Playing Spontaneously

OK, so I’m reviewing modules I just published to our LMS. I’m encountering an odd error. I have the slides set up with my own playback controls as opposed utilizing the LMS playbar. Therefore the slides obviously pause until the learner clicks the “Next” button. The error I’m encountering is the narration sound file for the next slide starts playing spontaneously even though the learner has not advanced the presentation. To further complicate things, it doesn’t happen every time. I’ve compared the slides where it’s occurring to spots where it’s not and am not finding anything different in the timeline, timing or properties. I should say the same thing happened in the preview mode in Captivate before uploading to the LMS. I proceeded with uploading to the LMS as I’ve found little quirks in preview don’t appear after upload to the LMS. I’m utilizing Captivate 2019 v 11.5.

Sorry for another comment, see that you are using custom navigation buttons as well. Do you know the relationship between audio and timeline pausing? Can be another cause.

I would like to see a screenshot of a Timeline. The possible cause could be that Captivate detects a ‘project’ audio file, which means that all audio clips are loaded in one workflow at the start of the project, or the first slide with audio.  This has been an old pain since many versions, but due to the slower performance of HTML5 published output it has become even worse.

Audio files need to be loaded at the start of each slide. To force keeping the audio clips ‘seen’ as individual clips, not part of a project audio file, having a small gap at the start and/or the end of its timeline is the solution. Sorry for that long explanation, but I don’t like to offer just a solution without any explanation. Doing so, will solve two issues:

  • No project audio file will be loaded at the start, causing your typical issue, but also possible synchronisation issues on long slides.
  • Audio clip loading will take less time.

Thanks for the quick response. That’s interesting. My narration audio files are loaded per slide. I attached a screenshot of a typical slide timeline. However, I’m going back in and clipping about .3 seconds off the front and end of the clip creating that gaps you suggest. I’ll report back on the result.

I couldn’t see the length of the timeline completely but slide is 171 secs. Even though the audio clips are each visible in the Library, without the gap(s) for the audio timeline Captivate still can ‘see’ them as part of a complete project audio file.

OK – I went through and installed the gaps before and after the audio on each slide and it worked beautifully! Thanks for the assist!

I’ve not experienced this myself but some users report that putting a small space before and after the audio on each slide (a half a second or so each) corrects this problem.
