Accessibility issues cause Jaws reader to not start automatically, read out of order, and stop mid-sentence inserting the word graphic.
Hello,
I am encountering several issues when applying accessibility to my course. Please let me know if you have a solution for the following:
- Graphic is stated after each text box is read. I have seen many comments on this. It has been stated this issue has been resolved in version 11.5 but I am still encountering it.
- Text reader stops reading mid-sentence. Not only does it stop reading mid-sentence, it mentions graphic at the end as well as in between any line space.
- Text reader will not automatically start reading the next slide. I am uncertain if this is how it is supposed to work.
- The first thing the text reader identifies to read are interactions instead of text boxes. I looked into the Tab Order but it is only for interactions. So, in my case, Jaws will skip the text and go straight to the next button. You must navigate with your arrow keys for Jaws to read the text, which then as mentioned above will stop mid-sentence and state graphic at the end.
I have tested entering the text into the Item Accessibility for the text box as well as for the slide. I copied and pasted the text, typed the text, and created a completely new slide. None of which has worked. I have also separated the sentences/paragraphs by word. The only way it seems to read the entire sentence or paragraph if I leave no space between words, essentially making it one gigantic word which of course does not read well.
Thank you
Try this. One by one, select all your objects on-screen and click on the tiny menu next to the object label and select accessibility. Uncheck Auto Label but don’t fill in the Accessibility name or description. Leave them blank. These will be ignored by the screen reader. Repeat this for everything on the slide that could be read by the screen reader.
Once you’ve done that, select the entire slide from the filmstrip and click the similar tiny menu and select Accessibility. In this field either import your slide notes or enter in the text that you want to be read out for this slide.
Hi Paul. Thank you for your reply. Prior to posting, I had done exactly what you have suggested. I did both import the slide notes as well as typed it into the Accessibility field within the slide. It continues stating “graphic” at the end of the text read. Its terrible because as I mentioned in the post, it not only mentions “graphic” at the end of the text but also in between line spaces. The text reader also stop mid-sentence, also stating “graphic” at this times as well.
As a side note, you are correct. If you do not want a particular text box or graphic to be read, you can go to that specific item’s accessibility and uncheck Auto Label, leaving the name and description blank. I did this specifically for images.
Thanks
