Action ‘jump to slide’ on Shapes as buttons not working on hotspot content pages

I am new to captivate and I’m looking for some guidance with my training. I’m using version 2019 v11.5.1.499

I’ve created a training that is delivering content via a series of non-scoring quizzes with transition slides between them. at the bottom of the slides is the navigation (previous and next) and two buttons called Demo and TAD. These are buttons learners can click to watch a video or read more information on the topic if they can’t answer the questions.

I have a version where it works correctly (see video

.

Based off user feedback we changed the navigation and TOC.  Now the pages that are multiple choice – the buttons work, but the hotspot pages – the buttons don’t work (see video

If I open both courses at the same time, neither of the courses allow the hotspots pages to click them Demo/TAD buttons. I have to reboot to get it working.

I have read several posts. I don’t have Branch aware turned on. I’m also including the TOC in case there’s something in there that I’ve done incorrectly. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you Lieve for looking at this project with me. You’re right, I do need training! I was planning to do the Captivate Certification but alas COVID-19 took our training budget.

I have read your post and I’ve attached the image that you asked for. I’ve removed the pauses on the smartshapes too.

I really appreciate your help and any insight you can provide.

You did activate ‘Click on Hotspots only’, which was what I meant. Taking out the pausing points is a good practice but was not the cause for your problems because the pausing points are at the same moment.

You kept the setting for Infinite Attempts. It means that the slide will never advanced if the answer is not correct, all hotspots have been clicked.

However you still have the same buttons on each slide. Can you try to have those buttons, which are needed on all slides, to be on the first slide where you need them, set them timed for the rest of the project, and activate the option ‘Always on top’.  Have no time to check this out for you.

Why I never use hotspot: it is much easier to use scored objects which need to be clicked.  Each of those objects can have its score. The Hotspot question allows only a score when ALL hotspots have been correctly clicked. It is rather easy to create a custom hotspot question, and for sure when it is not to be scored as is the case for a KC slide.

Have a look at:

It is bit too advanced maybe but gives you an idea.

I have more than 20 articles about Quizzes… search for ‘Quiz Resources’ in this portal and you’ll find an overview document. It can help to learn more about Quizzes with no budget. All is free on my blog.

You offer  a lot of details… thanks for that.  Sorry but have more questions.

You are using Knowledge Check slides, and the problem is  with the Hotspot type (which I never use myself, too limtied). You don’t show the setup of that Hotspot slide (Quiz Properities).

You have to know that all embedded objects on a default quiz/KC slide have absolute priority over added custom buttons. In his case your Demo  button is for sure a custom object, as are the two other shape buttons which I see in the partial Timeline screenshot (always post complete Timelines please, it is very important because lot of issues are due to  lack of understanding the Timeline). If you allowed the whole slide to be ‘wrong’ hotspot, clicking on one of your custom buttons will be seen as a wrong click.

It also looks like you have those buttons on ALL the slides. Please, do not use that old practice. Some of the buttons could be on the master slide (where you can verify that they do not interact with embedded objects on the quizzing master slide).  Others can be put on the first slide, timed for the rest of the project and always on top. The last scenario is needed if you have to hide/show them on some slides.

Those custom buttons have a pausing point, which makes no sense  in my mind. This proves my suspicion that you lack some understanding of the Timeline.

Too long answer, I know.  And you are lacking some training, which is clear.

In short:

  • please post the Quiz Properties panel for a Hotspot slide
  • post a screenshot of the complete timeline
  • take out the pausing points for your custom buttons.
