Adobe Captivate Questions
(4)

Hi community.

I am new to Adobe Captivate and want to share some of my learnings/struggles.

(1) When copying slides from one project to another certain functions disappear or it does not work as intended like it did on the first project. For example, I build a slide with text image and a button, when I copy that slide to re-use it in another project the button disappears completely.

(2) When I create them and want to set it as default theme it does not allow me to. I then import it every time but then only certain features will be applied. For example, I chose Arial font 14pt with a red box, it will change the properties to trial but won’t change the font size or the box color will be orange.

(3) Where can I get tips and tricks training, I am not looking for layout training but more best practice training. How to start your projects, save time, make it look professional, best practices for activities etc.

(4) When I copy-paste button between slides within projects the buttons don’t work, as an example, I create a button on slide 1 it works it takes me to slide 2 when I copy it to be used it does not work. I click and it does not take me to the next slide. I have checked the action it says next slide.

Sorry to hear about your struggles.

There is a pattern in your questions showing some gaps in your training:

  • Understanding the setup of a custom theme, what is included and how to set up such a theme before starting a project. Theme is one of the 3 main stumbling blocks which I mention in this blog:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/challenges-for-starters
  • Understanding of interactive object and the need for UNIQUE labeling. When you copy/paste an interactive object, the object itself and all the references in the actions will be renamed using a system called ‘Smart labeling’ by the Adobe staff. Mostly it means that a number will be added to the existing name. Result: you need to check the action (commands) triggered by the Success event of that interactive object.
  • If an item is missing on a copy/pasted slide, that can have multiple origins: maybe that item was on the master slide, or timed for the rest of the project? Just two possible reasons. Without seeing the project, difficult to be sure.

Maybe you never heard about ‘Shared Actions’. They are a better approach if you need to copy/paste interactive objects a lot. Have a crash course about Shared actions on my blog. You could also view my session at the Adobe eLearning World conference (still available in this portal) about ‘Deep dive into Captivate with Shared and Advanced Actions’. Although ignored by most developers they are real time savers… at least if used wisely. Same as for themes…
