Captivate 2020 version? HTML only version?

Everything else pretty much was released today.  Captivate did not update yet. Adobe pretty much dropped Flash.

I’ve been waiting.  Is anything coming in 2020?  When will Captivate be truly HTML only?

Pooja, I’ve read Captivate code as much as I could.  It really does need an update to get rid of things that are no longer used, like Flash; and when I used a code checker, it saw issues.  How about coming out with a new product that is a slimmed-down version of Captivate with ONLY HTML.  Stop trying to maintain heavy code.  Move forward with easily maintainable code, maybe even with a new team of programmers that know how to write maintainable code.  Then it would be much easier to add new features.

Sure, some outdated institutions might want to keep Flash around.  So let them use the old product.  But for the rest of the world, clean up your code.  I am waiting.

And just because Adobe owns Captivate Prime, it doesn’t mean the code should have to run on Captivate Prime to use all the features.  With the virus around, MANY businesses and coaches are moving to the web, gaining Zoom only customers, and them trying to put together a full course or courses.  Captivate and Captivate Prime could be capturing all of these newbies, but Captivate Prime isn’t affordable.

Adobe and much of the rest of the world just isn’t catching on to the paradigm-shift that is happening to small businesses, especially individual coaches.  The web is a gold mine for the little guy using zoom and starting a business.  Look at Google.  Their Google Cloud Platform starts free, has tons of do-it-yourself help, and businesses are quickly able to grow into something Google can charge a lot more for.  Learn from Google and Zoom with their free or low cost intro products.  Love the monthly pricing for Captivate and Creative Cloud, but Captivate Prime NOT.  There’s a lot I want to do with Captivate that is easier and doable on Captivate Prime but I have to wait until I grow bigger before meeting Captivate Prime’s minimum price.  And honestly, I’m waiting for your HTML only version of Captivate.  Don’t be a closed-system Apple, move away from Adobe Flash like the rest of the world, and into industry-standard code that is light-weight, and easier to maintain and add features to without breaking it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback for Captivate and Captivate Prime. We’ll surely keep it in mind for future versions and updates.

I Think Pamela is right, Adobe have made major steps forward with cloud products Captivate is being left behind. Its showing signs of a product ready to be dumped. No big updates full of old code that is no longer required (flash).

Many of the cloud products are already offering better interactive scope for training

Bernie you seem to forget that many SWF-based elearning projects are still around everywhere, not yet updated.  That is one of the reasons that Captivate still has the features needed for SWF output. L&D departments are not always up to date.

Do you like it when you are on tight budget, and the most recent version of PS suddenly doesn’t support your graphics card anymore?

Can you point me to a cloud product that has all the eLearning features of Captivate or more? I must have missed those gems because I have never found them. Maybe explain what you mean by ‘better interactive scope’? I am just a simple professor with good insights in effiicient learning assets.

Does Adobe have a road map for Captivate? We are almost at the end of 2020. Captivate 2019 came out in 2018. It would be nice to have an idea of when will the next version of Captivate come out.

Want to add some explanations to Pooja’s answer.

You probably ignore that Captivate is not part of the Creative Cloud. Yesterday the Adobe MAX conference started and that is when a lot of updates to CC applications are released. I suspect you are referring to those (Photoshop, Illustrator, …. the Adobe apps like the wonderful Illustrator for iPad).

Since Captivate is not part of that group, like several other Adobe applications (Framemaker, RoboHelp…) they do not follow the schedule of the CC applications.

About publishing only to HTML5 with Captivate that is perfectly possible since several versions.  Pooja has pointed that out as well. Since the EOL of Flash Player was announced years ago, I have never published to SWF anymore and persuaded clients not to do so as well.

Hi Pamela,

Captivate allows you to create HTML5 content with the current version. We also released an update with some bug fixes a few days back. You can see the details here: https://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/release-note/adobe-captivate-2019-update-5-release-notes.html
