Is there a way to trigger text-to-speech with a button? Or will it always play automatically when the slide opens?

Text-to-speech will create an audio clip from text (maybe from slide notes). That audio clip will automatically be inserted on the slide as slide audio. Typical for slide audio is that it plays when the slide appears. It is necessary to use that type of audio if you want Closed Captioning or want to synchronize audio with objects appearing on the timeline.

The audio clip created by TTS will also be available in the Library. Use the right-click menu on the Audio timeline in the Timeline panel to find the clip (has a generic name).  To not have the audio play automatically there are two ways:

  • If you need Closed Captioning or synchronization, you can mute the audio on the slide or for the project. Use the command ‘Assign’ to be triggered On Enter for the slide, point to the system variable cpCmndMute and assign the value 1.   If the learner wants to hear the audio with a button, use the Assign command for the same system variable and assign 0, or if you have a playbar, it will be possible with the Audio button on the playbar.
  • If you don’t need CC or synching, delete the audio timeline in the Timeline panel, after having found the audio clip in the Timeline. Create a button with the command ‘Play Audio’ and point to the audio clip in the library. If you want to offer a stop button as well, use the command ‘Stop Triggered Audio’. Beware: that command is only valid for audio clips started with ‘Play Audio’, not for slide audio nor object audio.

You can create and export the audio and trigger it via the click of an object.
