Does anybody know how to convert Captivate files that currently use Flash?

Hi I found this may be interesting if you do not have the source files.

by another Adobe user Paul Wilson (I cant take the credit)

In that case you find the suggestion to record parts of the SWF playing with the Video Demo feature. Convert the published MP4 to an interactive video, which may have to be distributed over multiple slides. Very interactive slides can be recreated and re-inserted. That solution was already mentioned in the blog to which I linked in the first comment I offered.

Yes, Lieve is correct. To convert SWF output from Captivate you need the original files. But often things that were usable in SWF output may not be useable in HTML output. Newer versions of Captivate offer an HTML compatibility checker to help determine what is available or not. If you don’t have the original captivate files then you will probably have to recreate them or hire someone to do so.

HTML tracker can be helpful but is not perfect at all. It will mention all rollovers as being incompatible, while that is only the case on devices without real ‘hover’ event (smartphone, tablet). Some incompatible items are not mentioned.

Good to know. Which incompatible items aren’t mentioned? That’s surprising. Things like this make captivate feel like an incomplete product.

I had problems with some SWF-based widgets in the past, not mentioned by the tracker.  If you use fluid boxes, but don’t set them up properly you’ll have tons of issues in HTML5 output, but that is due to developer-bugs. Upgrade problems with Themes will not be mentioned. It is a useful tool, but it is not perfect. It is very temporary as well, only meant for the period of conversions of old projects to HTML5 output. For a significant number of conversions, recreation from scratch will save time. Using assets from External Libraries of course.

I never used an application which was perfect. 15 years ago I logged bugs in MS Project, which have never been fixed… All due to the speed needed for new upgrades. The good old days of almost perfect WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3 are gone…

I have the cptx files, Captivate version 9. Have been publishing for HTML5 for years, only to find out today that they do not work on our SCORM compliant LMS. Do you know how I can publish to get these to work? What type of file outputs should I see? Thank you.

Hi, I am using Captivate 9, publishing to HTML5 for years, but I cannot get my courses to work in LMS. I do not have compatibility issues. What files should I see when published? I see an htm file and still a swf file, though I did not ask for it to be published to swf.

If you still see a htm file and a swf file in the output, you have used DUAL publishing both to SWF and HTML5. That is to be avoided, because HTML5 output has been updated a lot since CP9 whereas SWF output of course has been left in its legacy state.  With dual publishing when deployed on a desktop/laptop the SWF output will be seen.

If you have issues on the LMS, you have to inquire if the used webserver supports JSON because that is needed for PNG images since second version of CP8.

I think  you mean SWF output, which needs Flash Player to be able to be viewed? The Flash application which is still very much alive is something different, has been renamed Animate.

You need to offer some more details.  Since almost 4 years the death of Flash Player on desktop browsers have been announced. Responsive projects were never published to SWF, for non-responsive projects you have been able since multiple versions to publish only to HTML5.

Depending on what you have from those older Captivate projects: only output or the raw cptx-files, you can convert or not. Which version are you using actually? It is not a one-step process at all. Do you want to do it in-house or will your find someone to help? It may take a lot more time than you estimate. Many companies have already switched during the recent years.

Have a look at this blog, which has a Captivate poll on board, explaining three possible scenarios:
