I’ve tried various resources to improve my Captivate Skills. Of course, what works for you will depend on your preferences. Do you like a comprehensive baseline overview before you start? Or would you rather jump in at the deep end and search for guidance on specifics, as the need arises? I like a bit of both. Here are notes from my personal experience.

Baseline

Type Resource Benefits Bear in mind
Paid online course and certification The Adobe Certified Professional
  • Clear, comprehensive beginner/intermediate videos + downloadable projects
  • Optional human trainer
  • Nice interface and progress-tracking via Captivate Prime LMS
  • can pass exam and be award certification badge at the end
  • Adobe official, via partner Carahsoft
  • $499-$999 investment
  • A thorough overview, but does not get into advanced tricks and workarounds?
Third party book Mastering Adobe Captivate 2019(Also involves Dr. Pooja Jaisingh. Same as above)
  • Choice of physical book or ebook
  • Good value buying ebook direct from Packt
  • If you buy physical, check the edition. (currently fifth)
  • Buying from non-Packt retailer (eg. Amazon) does not give discount on ebook

Specifics

Type Resource Benefits Bear in mind
Youtube and web eg. Paul Wilson is great
  • Free! (with ads)
  • Small optional subscription ($5/month) for download projects and Q&A
  • Includes advanced tricks and workarounds
  • New content every week
  • Youtube search works very well
  • Youtube suggested off-topic videos may distract you
  • Online only
Online community https://elearning.adobe.com/
  • You are here!
  • Lots of nice people
  • Opportunity for you to give back, by sharing your own discoveries, innovations and experiences

Another top tip: Video Playback speed

Both the Adobe Certified course and Youtube allow video playback speed adjustment (click the cog). I find 1.5x perfectly understandable, and it saves time. Try it! 😊

Hello !…

I think you forget to mention the Adobe Captivate Forum :

https://community.adobe.com/t5/captivate/bd-p/captivate?page=1&sort=latest_replies&filter=all

Where you’ll find an active community with many helpers (Specialists in Advanced or Shared actions but also with Javascript, SCORM…)…

(Without this Forum, no doubt I would have never managed to use Captivate as I do today…)
