Hello,
My name is George J. Newton.

I am writing to ask if I can contribute an article about  HOW TO REMOVE NICE-TO-KNOW INFORMATION FROM YOUR ELEARNING  to ” elearning.adobe.com “?
What do you think about this idea?

Hope to hear from you soon,
George J.Newton

When designing training for adult employees we look to the job description during our needs analysis to determine what should be included in the training. Subject matter experts usually want to throw everything at the learners but as eLearning designers, developers, it’s our job to curtail that behaviour. If I need employees to know A, B and C that’s just what the training includes. You can optionally include links to D, E and F but make sure it’s strictly optional or for interests’ sake. For example, you can include links to websites that include optional information but only make that available once the course has been completed. No sense distracting your audience with information that doesn’t necessarily help them to their immediate job.

Exactly what seems to be both the most important and the hardest thing to achieve in any form of learning: finding out what is essential and what not. I use other terms but we mean the same. In college we often had discussions about that topic, many professors think their course is essential and nothing can be left out. Even though the environment (easy access to information) has changed a lot compared with 20, 50, 100 years ago.

In eLearning this is even more important. Think about the boring text-heavy ‘presentations’ which you find everywhere because the SME is convinced that everything needs to be in that course, and you’ll have many discussions convincing him/her/them about deleting superfluous information or information that can be found easily.

In my instructional design schooling, one of the things we talked about when designing a lesson was identifying the things that students NEED TO KNOW versus what is simply NICE TO KNOW. The idea is that we should focus on what the learner needs to know to meet the objectives of the lesson as a way of preventing your e-learning to become too bloated and keep from going off on tangents.

Hello George,

Welcome to the Adobe eLearning Community! You can definitely contribute articles on eLearning here. I am a little confused about the topic. It’d be great if you’re open to discuss some points that you’d include in this article. Thanks!
