I have created a project in licensed version of Captivate,  the situation is:  can I open the same project in trial version and make edits too ?

Any barriers of Captivate versions ? how to tackle that ?

I think the answer to your question is yes, as long as your trial version of the software is equal or higher than the licensed one…

One of the things I don’t like in Captivate is that it’s not just backward compatible in a sense that you cannot open a CPTX made using Captivate 2019 in Captivate 2017, you also cannot open a CPTX file made  Captivate 2019 (ver.11.1) in an upgraded Captivate 2019 (ver. 11.5), making it difficult to take freelancing jobs using Captivate.

One of the reasons is that with each version new features are added and/or existing features are extended.  How would you like it when you have several features stopping to work or looking different when opening in an older version? You can however have several versions installed on one system, something which is not possible for other applications at all.  With perpetual licenses there is no limit. I still have version 5.5 installed on an older system (wouldn’t work under Win10).  Subscription licenses are limited to the two most recent versions, you can have both CP2017 and CP2019 (11.5) installed and working.

If you created a project in 11.5 and used SVGs as buttons, all the button functionality would be lost when opening the project in version 11 or 10.  Just one example.

If he’s just editing in the trial version, the CPTX file remains. Only the published version is affected. Could it be that the OP is taking work from home, or maybe they are awaiting for some procurement department to buy them a license after the previous license expired?

To add to Lieve’s excellent comment about Trial publishing, you would also not be able to open your edited project in an earlier version. Captivate files are not backward compatible. Older version files can open in newer versions of the software, but newer version files cannot be opened in older versions of the software. Opening and editing in a trial version will lock you into buying the newer version.

You could edit it within the trial period. However you need to know that when you (re)publish with a trial version the output will have an expiry date of 1 month.  What is the sense in that case of editing with a trial version?

I am expecting a bulk production, we have 1 licensed version available from where we will do the publishing , however if we have to engage 1/2 more people only for editing works in Work From Home scenario, we were thinking of having a trial version, for only 10/15 days.  Hope this sounds logical

To play safe, set up a workflow where the project after editing with a trial version, is saved by the person with the licensed version. That way there will never be a problem.
