Using Buttons to Show Definitions and change highlight color

I am new to Captivate, and I am working on a reading lesson.  I have a paragraph of text on the slide, with 30 highlighted words.  The user is supposed to select all of the “Tier 2” words.  When the learner clicks on a highlighted word, I would like one of three actions to happen:

  1. (incorrect choice) – Text displays briefly and disappears on the next click:  “Incorrect – this is a Tier 1 Word”
  2. (incorrect choice) – Text displays briefly and disappears on the next click: “Incorrect – this is a Tier 3 Word”
  3. (correct choice) – Text displays briefly and disappears on the next click: “Correct – this is a Tier 2 Word” – the button changes to a different transparent background color  – and it remains that color until the user goes to the next slide.

I have created buttons over each word that are transparent yellow to create the highlighted look.  When I play the slide, the incorrect definitions remain on the screen even though I set the duration to two seconds.  And I have not been able to figure out how to change the color of the button/highlight color for the correct answers. Any help would be much appreciated!  Thank you!

I have answered the same question two days ago in the Adobe forum, and asked for more clarification (which I didn’t get). The question here is already bit more clarified. Here is the original thread:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/captivate/multiple-buttons-with-feedback-on-one-screen/td-p/11969604

However in the original question there was another requirement: “… They will only get 15 tries and can keep trying until they get all of the correct words.”  You don’t explain that.

You may have read my answer, but now I see that you cannot use hyperlinks (I thought that was what you meant) since you need color changes (was not in the original questions). For the rest my answer remains the same:

  • Create a multistate text object, which has 4 states: Normal state is empty and the 3 other states have the three text messages.
  • If you need to use a counter because something has to happen after all correct words have been clicked… tell me.
  • For the correct words you will still need a shared action, not for the incorrect words. For those words you just need the simple action ‘Change state of….’ and show the appropriate state. Such a state automatically is replaced when changing to another state. If you really want it to disappear before the learner clicks another word, tell me…
  • For the button used over the incorrect words, you do not need to change anything to the states. But for the one over the correct words, add a custom state with the color that has to appear when the button is clicked.
  • For the correct words you’ll need a shared or advanced action based on these commands:
Change state of Text object to….
Change state of button to …
