Hello everyone! Beginner here I seem to be experiencing writers block. I’m ready to start my first Captivate project for my portfolio but I’m unsure what topic to use. I appreciate any ideas!
Thanks!
Why not have a look at the following website. It lists all the Nationally accredited courses in Australia. Each has Performance requirements and Assessment requirements. Pick a topic you like and then write to the requirements.
All LD and ID in Australia working in the VET sector use this resource when writing training materials.
Hi! Where would you consider yourself to be a subject matter expert (SME)? I always think it’s best to train what you know.
It doesn’t have to be something overly difficult– you could create training on how to properly tie a shoe. I had a classmate design training for grilling the perfect steak.
Ideally, you should create training that will attract potential employers (if your goal is developing a professional portfolio), but the most important thing is creating a quality project that teaches to your instructional objectives. Good luck with your first project!
Here’s something that has helped me both learn the software AND build portfolio worthy items (because let’s face it, when you are new and learning, most of your stuff isn’t going to be portfolio ready…)
Visit the forums of the other leading elearning software companies (like the elearning heroes community) and complete the challenges, but do it using Captivate. You can develop some pretty creative interactions and pages, and then use them as a type of template to create a cohesive sample course that should be fit for a portfolio, will demonstrate your skill with Captivate, your creativity, and if you design the instruction in a storyboard or design doc, you can use that to highlight your ID skills as well. good luck!
Starting can be hard. I know it took me a while to get something going, but once I did, I started to have other ideas on what to create.
The problem now is finding the time to develop things as well as continue to use the software to be able to put out even better content.
I agree with both previous posters and would only really add another question. Have you created something previously for a different purpose that you can repurpose into Captivate? That might be a place to start. That is what I did actually, and found that it provided me with additional idea on what to include.
My 2¢…
Think about the areas in which you are a subject matter expert. What are some key things others would need to know if they wanted to become experts in the same area?
In this community – we all pretty much have Captivate in common but have different backgrounds in other things.
As the saying goes… bloom where you’re planted.
