Adobe Captivate -How to program or publish file so it remembers where the user was at in the training.

I  was wondering if Adobe Captivate allows you to program or publish the file in a way that when the user comes back it remembers where they were at in the training so they do not have to keep starting over.

Using a LMS like moodle you have the option to configure it, but Iv seen sometimes it gives you an error. so be aware the funtion doesnt work properly.

I am wondering if your Captivate file only has one slide and has interactive pieces on that one slide.  Even if I turn on the TOC  and select Self Paced Learner. It clears all the progress I have made on that slide when I come back. I do get the message of do you want Adobe Captivate to remember where you were, and I selected Yes.  I am not sure how to get this information to retain on this one slide file. Any help would be appreciated.

All bookmarking is always slide- based, same as a real bookmark in a book: it will not indicate the last sentence you have read, just the page.

This is a reason NOT to create very long slides. Captivate’s slide-based approach makes it possible to distribute content over multiple slides while the learner will not even be aware of that.  This is a common misunderstanding which you just expressed.

If you need remembering the exact frame where the learner has been on one slide, you’ll need to do some serious programming on server-side. Both to allow to go to the most recent visited frame, and to remember that frame.

If you are talking about a slide with video, inserted as slide video, I would convert it to an interactive video, and add a menu to allow the learner to navigate to important points in the video. More in:

Thank you for your response. I think there is a misunderstanding in my question and  I apologize if I was not clear.  My file is one slide. It is an interactive game board.  I am trying to track where the user left off on the game board when they return so they do not have to start over. When the select a specific spot on the game board a star marks that spot as complete.  I am hoping that Captivate would remember this for them when they return.

That is the reason I used the comparison with a book. When you use a real (or digital) bookmark, it points to the slide you last visited, not to the last word.

This will only be possible by using a good programmer. Everything needs to be stored in variables. It could be done by using local storage, but that would require the learner to use the same system when returning, and without clearing the browser history. Better solution would be server-side programming to replicate the bookmarking which exists for slides.

What you want is called ‘bookmarking’. There are two ways to achieve this:

  1. Best way is to use the course in a Learning Management system. All eLearning authoring tools are preparing courses to be used that way. In that case with the default setup in Captivate for Reporting, bookmarking will happen automatically. The information is stored in ‘Resume Data’.
  2. If you do not want to use a LMS, you can turn on bookmarking in the Table of Contents. Check the option ‘Self-paced learning’ in the setup for the TOC. That method uses local storage, which means it will only be functional if the learner uses the same system/browser to log in and didn’t clear cookies nor history in that browser.
