I have added closed captioning to a Captivate video slide project.  When it is played in Captivate, the closed captioning pauses when you pause the video.  However, when I export the video presentation, and it is accessed, the closed captions do not pause when the video is paused.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

When adding closed captions to slides that contain videos you should make sure of a few things.

  1. Use Slide Video (or Interactive Video). Event video is not compatible with Closed Captioning
  2. Add your Closed Captions using the Edit Video Timing button found in the Properties Inspector. This will ensure that your closed captions are timed according to the audio found in the video itself.
  3. Make sure that there are no pauses on your timeline (usually found because of a button or other interactive object) that pause the slide before the video plays completely. You can delay the pause point to after the video has finished playing by selecting the interactive object and setting the Pause time on the Timing Panel next to the Properties Inspector.

Terminology in Captivate is rather complicated. Can you answer some questions to clarify?

  • Are you talking about a cptx-project with slides, and did you add CC to the slides, based on the audio narration?
  • Or are you talking about slides with slide video, where you added CC to the video, based on the audio in the video?
  • Did you publish to HTML5 or to video (MP4)? The CC in Captivate will only be functional when you publish to HTML5.

It also helps if you mention the full version number (look under Help, About Captivate to find it) and the OS you are using.
