Should I move from other popular authoring tool to captivate…

Hi, I am an instructional designer and have been using one of the other popular rapid authoring tools to create eLearning for the company. I do the graphic design element using adobe creative suit and just wondered if there was any advantages to using Adobe Captivate in comparison to other software?  Does it interlink better with after effects, illustrator etc better?

As a multimedia designer, I prefab everything first before I even really start stitching together. Asset management is a huge part of what we do and in that way I have found other tools to be a lot more useful. If I am being honest I am only on captivate for three more months so I can push all projects out to the “other tool” – plus collaborative review on the other tool is a game changer. A little savvy and organization can get you to bridge the adobe gap into the other tool without sacrificing functionality. Sorry Adobe.

One of the main reasons I have chosen for Captivate over other tools, and continue to use it, is exactly the possible collaboration with other Adobe tools. The ’roundtripping’ with Adobe Photoshop is really wonderful and I hope a similar workflow will be created with Illustrator and Animate CC.  It is possible to edit a SVG with Illustrator from within Captivate (SVGs are only more recently possible, next to bitmap images). There was a great roundtripping with Flash in the past, but synchronizing with Animate for OAMs needs updating. Collaboration with Audition exists since eons, and I am using it for each project. There is no real roundtripping with After Effects, personally I never needed it because Captivate has more limited possibilities built in, but importing mp4 is not a problem of course. To mention as well: the possibility to use Adobe fonts in Captivate, too bad that Captivate still has no access to CC Libraries.  I would have loved to be able to edit the raw Video Demo files directly in Premiere Pro, but that is not (yet) the case. FYI: Video Demo projects are similar to Camtasia projects for pure video output, but can be converted to interactive videos as well.

Have a look at this blog post where I explained roundtripping between CP and PS for non-Photoshop users:

You will find the typical Rulers/Guides in Captivate and several shortcut keys are very familiar if you are using Creative Cloud applications. You will find several references to other Adobe tools on my blogsite.

The learning curve with Captivate may be bit steeper, but the second main reason I prefer this tool is its flexibility and the multitude of features never let me feel restricted by the tool, neither on design nor on pedagogical level (interactivity).
