Hi fellow IDs!

I wasn’t sure where to post this, but I’ve had some enlightening conversations here before. I am a newly hired eLearning specialist at a small medical clinic (first job as an ID!). I have been tasked with finding and proposing an authoring tool + LMS for the company. That is to say, they have no LMS or Authoring software. I have experience with Articulate and Adobe, so naturally I suggested those to my boss, but she didn’t like the price tag (we are a small office) and they don’t come with access to a LMS. My question is this:

Can you recommend an LMS that comes with an integrated authoring tool? Or if not, can you recommend a pairing of the two that might seem more economical to a small business? I love and prefer adobe, but sadly the standalone tool seemed too pricey when I proposed it to my boss and it doesn’t come with an LMS. I’ve been put in an awkward place of laying the groundwork for our training programs, but without certainty of which tools I will be able to work with.

Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

Caleb

Agree, your elerning project on moodle integrated with your virtual courses made in captivate is for me, the option where you have the flexibility youu need to create something vaulable.

For Captivate, perhaps instead of the higher price tag up front for a perpetual license – they would be better able to swallow the monthly subscription price…? $34 a month

For an LMS – it may be helpful to try and figure out how many accounts they anticipate serving. Will it be for internal folks, external clients, or both? If they’re just starting out perhaps the number of accounts will be relatively low. If they intend to sell the content you create – that can help offset the cost.

TalentLMS does have an active user plan for $129 a month that will support up to 40 users each month.
They have e-commerce and the ability to create some content pages but don’t expect it to be as full featured as Captivate. It does support SCORM 1.2. Another feature it has is the ability to make content public so that accounts are not necessary. You won’t have tracking for that but it could help keep account numbers under control.

That is pretty much low end and you’re looking at a couple grand per year for a very robust authoring tool and a starter LMS.

If they can’t at least do that… I agree with Lieve – odd they would invest considerable $$$ for a dedicated position and then balk at the necessary tools.

Most LMSs will come with a possibility to create quiz slides, but nothing more. Do not expect a real authoring tool which in your environment is something you really need.

Moodle can be used, in a limited version, for free as LMS. If you have access to a good programmer you could set up an internal server to replace a LMS. There are some very cheap authoring tools around, but don’t expect them to have all the features of Captivate, Lectora or Storyline. I have been training a medical doctor who was appointed to develop eLearning assets for a pediatric clinic and have a pretty good idea of what is needed.

They may start on a very strict budget, and later on discover that is was not what is wanted. It looks bit weird, hiring a dedicated person, but not wanting to spend money on proper tools…
