Software Onboarding Captivate Template.
Hi-
I’m working on a project and I need a game changing Captivate project template. I need to create an e-learning module that teaches hospital employees (nurses, support personnel and many others) how to use a new hospital wide software program. I’m going to break this project into 5 different 15 minute modules; there will be quizzes and knowledge checks.
I’m open to any suggestions.
Best–
Mark
I would suggest to take a step back and create a lesson plan. If the hospital staff need to learn a new software, a good suggestion for an objective is to learn the layout of the software. If your new software has the standard navigation menus, then a good first objective is to create an interactive slide for new users to navigate through the software. When I teach a new software, programming language or medical device, I first walk the user through each of the knobs, controls, buttons. Also include a glossary slide for terms, abbreviations and codes since this is the first time they will be using this software.
So while this reply isn’t giving you a template, a lesson plan with a clearly defined objective for your training, should be somewhere at the beginning of your lesson.
Personally I wouldn’t recommend to create responsive projects for software sims. I have created tons of software sims for my students and coached developers for the health sector as well. Know also that Captivate allows to create interactive videos and that 360 slides can be very useful in the health sector.
For software sims:

Never use a cptl file (Captivate template file) anymore, they are very buggy since multiple versions.
Set up a custom theme and/or create a cptx file which you lock, so that you need to make a copy to be able to edit it. A custom theme will provide you with a solid start point, includes Theme fonts, Theme colors, Object Styles, Master Slides, set up for Recording and formatting of the TOC. You can supplement with an external Library containing much used assets like graphics, audio clips, video clips, animations, and… shared actions (which automatically provide you also with the variable creation).
A all-round start cptx project is much more limited, and would need customisation anyway. As I wrote: avoid the real template files (cptl).
Screen the Quick Start Projects in Captivate, it is possible to get some ideas there about the wanted ‘style’ of your projects.
You need a lot of reflection as well: how will your projects be viewed? On laptop/desktop or also on mobile devices. There is a big difference between a theme for a responsive and a theme for a non-responsive project.
Have a look at this blog:

It is rather old, but mostly still valid. The most recent version of Captivate (11.5) has improved theme features.
