I’m attempting to moving into a design / development space with my employer and Captivate has come up as a learning platform that I should be familiar with.  What are your top 5 “must know” items/resources for a new user?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, experience and knowledge.

These responses all have such great advice – I’m also new and looking for suggestions on how to best use Captivate.

I think the mistake that most new Captivate users make is that they assume you can just pick up the software and start using it and will figure it out as you go. I strongly encourage you to consider some type of training where you can gain some hands-on experience using the tool. The obvious choice is the Adobe Professional Certification: Adobe Captivate 2019. You can learn more here: https://www.adobe.com/products/captivate/certificate.html

(full disclosure — I’m one of the facilitators for the virtual training portion of the above certification.

Of course, this isn’t the only program out there and you are free to search the internet and find a training program that suits your learning needs.

In the meantime, you can also pick up some hints and tips from my YouTube channel with over 500 videos about Adobe Captivate.

This is so helpful! I’m in a uni course right now using Captivate for the first time and I went into it with the mentality of “learn as I go” – these links are really good for new people like me!

My top 5 would be:

  1. Pick a good eLearning autoring tool that meets your needs and the needs of your company.
  2. Spend time to learn how to use the authoring tool.  The internet and communities like this are a great resource.
  3. Find sources for assets that you may wish to use.  Images, videos, animations, audio, etc., and/or work out how you are going to create/ modify these yourself.
  4.  Decide how you are going to host your courses. A good quality Learning Management System (LMS) is the best answer, but these can be expensive.
  5. Decide how your learners are going to consume the learning that you develop.  For example, will they only access via a computer/ laptop, or will they want to access the learning on tablets and mobile phones?  Do they need access to the courses when offline?

I hope this helps to set you on the right path.

You probably already looked for similar questions (and answers) but a ‘simple’ answer is impossible. So much depends on your background, both in pedagogy and use of online learning tools. No one is ever a newbie as ‘learner’ since we all have been enjoying or suffering teaching and coaching.

Captivate is a eLearning authoring tool, normally used in collaboration with a Learning Management system. Adobe has Prime as LMS, but you could use courses created with Captivate on any LMS provided it is SCORM compliant.

As for the authoring tool (Captivate), here is a blog post I wrote a while ago, but still valid, explaining the three main challenges for starters:

Nowadays I would add a 4th hurdle, once you mastered the first three: developing responsive projects with Fluid Boxes.
