Storyline 360 to Captivate

My organization is considering moving from Storyline 360 to Captivate. We already have a library of courses created with Storyline/Rise 360. Has anyone made this move in the past? How difficult was it to recreate your courses in Captivate? In the end, was it worth all having to recreate your courses? (From my understanding, they are not compatible and will not transfer.) Do you feel Captivate is a better authoring tool?

They are different tools for the same purpose, you must choose the one that match with your needs and of course the client needs.

In my experience Storyline performs better in animations.

No, the courses will not transfer over as they are different applications.

As I have read in the responses to your original post, it seems updates are frequent with the courses, so I guess the decision will need to be based on how much updating the initial switch will cost in terms of timing for the work. You won’t necessarily be starting from scratch, but at the same time, you will be in another way as you are moving to a new tool. Therefore, you have to build new.

I have and do use both tools. Captivate has a longer learning curve than Storyline (in my opinion), but it doesn’t mean you can’t create some good learning with Captivate as you learn.

Rise is a completely different tool than either Captivate or Storyline, so comparing them is not apples to apples at all. Captivate and Storyline are the comparable tools.

Essentially, what you create in Storyline can be created in Captivate, just a bit differently and the process is different.  They also may not look or operate exactly the same, but you should be able to build it similarly, if that makes any sense.

To answer your question as to whether it is worth it or not, it depends on too many factors. Maybe your org is getting a better bulk rate with Adobe. Maybe they want to start developing different types of training. Maybe they just want to switch things up. I don’t really know. I think the value of worth in this case will depend on your organization. I know not the answer you want to hear, but really, without knowing the factors or the decision making going into it, I can’t answer.

As for is it better, again, one person will likely Storyline, one person will like Captivate. Some will like both. Some will have a preference. They do different things, but similar things at the same time. Not the first time I have answered this question this way.

In some cases, we don’t have the luxury of choosing what we use. When an organization is paying for the software, that is the software we use. Sometimes we just have to roll with it. But learning another tool can only help you as a designer.

Portal has issues again. I posted a long answer hours ago but it disappeared. One of the reasons why the Articulate community is far better, but personally I prefer Captivate largely over Rise because it has a lot more in its toolbox and has great roundtripping with other Adobe applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, Animate…

My previous answer was meant to give you some hints when trying to recreate courses in Captivate.  Trying to remember:

  1. Captivate has a project library.  Import all the assets you can retrieve into that Library, it can save you time. More in:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/internal-and-external-libraries
  2. Design in Captivate theme-based. Setting up a theme for a project is the first step when starting development of a course.
  3. Timeline panel is essential, but too bad it is hidden in the Newbie UI, click the Timeline title to open it.
  4. Have a look at the way interactivities are created in the Quick Start Projects which you find in the Assets panel.

Sorry forgot the other hints.

I am curious as to why you feel you have to recreate them all..?

If the content is sound and there is no need to update the material –  can’t the modules you have run as they are?

I guess I would only feel the need to recreate a published work when there was something about it that needed changing. I guess it may be a worthwhile exercise to attempt recreating some works for the sake of learning Captivate but that could be a project that you take your time on so long as you have perfectly good modules out there made with a different product.

The reasons folks have for what they deem as good or better than another are different from person to person. I personally do prefer Captivate for it’s flexibility but you’ll learn quickly that the Articulate Community E-Learning Heroes is far superior.

We have to update our courses 2-3 times a year due to updates and new releases in our software. I am just trying to figure out if making the switch is worth it. Thank you!
