Using Advanced Actions in Captivate
I've been creating e-learning projects in Adobe Captivate for 12 years.

This is the fifth in a series of videos I’m creating that walks through various features of a recent project I created in Adobe Captivate.  It shows how I used Advanced Actions to display hotspot information.

Just to be clear, this isn’t a traditional tutorial showing a step-by-step process although there will be elements of that, it’s more an insight into how I approached my project.

You asked for comment,  but I want to ask some questions:

  • Why do you use ‘Stop Triggered Audio’?  That command is only meant to stop audio which has been started with the ‘Play Audio’ command. I see only slide audio, where is the Play audio triggered?
  • Since you have to hide so many objects with the advanced action, I would have created groups to get rid of a lot of lines in the Advanced action. This could also open the possibility of using shared instead of advanced actions since you need to repeat a similar action several times.
  • The Visited state in an interactive object appears automatically when you have clicked that button, it is an InBuilt state. Why did you need to use the Change State command? Have a look at this blog post

  • It helps when seeing the complete action in one view. Please show the Preview window which you can open using the first button (arrow) in the top right control panel.
  • Be careful with labeling: many developers prefer identifying variables by using v_ or var in their name. One of the most common mistakes is to us use the same name for different objects, variables, decisions. Believe me, have debugged so many advanced actions since over a decade that this is one of my first tips I always offer during training for actions.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.

In addition to the slide-level audio, an audio file can be triggered on the slide by clicking the audio icon for a hotspot, therefore I added the action to stop triggered audio to allow for situations where the audio had been triggered and then the viewer clicked a different hotspot before the triggered audio had finished.
