Live Stream (Recorded) – Instructional Design Job Interview Secrets | September 19th, 2022
I've been an eLearning designer and developer since 2005. In 2015 I started my own eLearning design company. I began creating Adobe Captivate video tutorials to help promote my business through my YouTube channel at https://youtube.com/captivateteacher. My intention with my YouTube videos was to attract attention from organizations looking for a skilled Captivate developer. This strategy proved successful as I've worked with clients worldwide, helping them build highly engaging eLearning solutions. In addition, my YouTube channel presented another benefit of attracting aspiring Captivate developers to seek me out as a teacher. I now offer online and onsite training on Adobe Captivate, teaching users the skills to build engaging and interactive learning.

I am a troubleshooter and problem solver – you tell me what you want and I will figure out how to make it look or work that way. That has been my MO.

Sounds like an elevator pitch to me. You probably can get passionate about the things you exceed at even though you don’t think of yourself as a marketer. You definately have impressed me with your solutions to challenges over the years.

Interesting insights, Paul.
I have heard many of these things and I am positive they work well. I just personally struggle with doing them.

Some anecdotal thoughts on my own experience for the sake of discussion.

Foremost – I don’t work in sales – There is a reason for that – I struggle trying to sell myself.

Selling product is slightly easier – I don’t mind bragging up a product if I like it – but I don’t like asking people for money either.

Interviews can make me feel superficial and phony. I don’t like that so I struggle with them. Over time as I got older, I tended to stay away from rehearsed answers using their “keywords” just so I can sound good or tell them what they want to hear. I’ve tried to keep it real in a WYSIWYG sort of way vs putting on a stage performance. No bait and switch.

I am a troubleshooter and problem solver – you tell me what you want and I will figure out how to make it look or work that way. That has been my MO.

I feel like the hiring committee knows that everyone is coming to an interview to put on their best act and I don’t want to put on an act at all. I don’t want to figure out all the right things to say just to get hired. I just want to low-key be me and if we click, great – if not, that’s fine too. That doesn’t mean I am unprofessional, I just need the prospective employer to know the real me so I don’t have to pretend during the daily grind. If they don’t like that I didn’t do the act – so be it. I would rather work for the one who appreciates the raw authenticity that I will bring.

The only thing that I really spend time customizing for each individual interview is my list of questions for them.

Please don’t misinterpret the above to suggest that I think everyone is being phony in their interviews. I am not saying that – only that is how I feel about it personally when I am in that situation. Will I get more rejections? Probably, but I am Ok with that because when I do land something – I think it will be the better fit in the end.
