Software Simulation – Redirecting learners to the training video

Hi

I am looking to create a training package of some new software.  Some users will be able to complete the new process correctly straight away but others will not be able to.

Rather than forcing everyone to watch every training video regardless of their experience, I was hoping to set up an assessment software simulation, which will only redirect users to watch the corresponding video if they make a mistake

Am I able to set up a software simulation assessment where by if the learner makes a wrong choice when completing the process, they can be redirected to watch the training video again?

I know you can do this with Quiz questions but is it possible in the software sim assessment?  If so can anyone direct me to help on how to achieve this?

Thanks so much.

Hi thank you for taking the time to reply.  I am on a steep learning curve with this and my terminology hasn’t caught up!  To clarify (I hope)  I have made a Software SIM and am using the Assessment output of the SIM to create a graded assessment.  I wanted to find out if during the assessment, if the learner makes a mistake, they can be directed automatically to some form of remediation.  Or in the Training SIM, I don’t know if it works on either version of the SIM

Terminology is a big problem in Captivate, do not feel sorry. I understood your question correctly, but there is no automatic remediation in software sims, assessment nor training mode. My questions were: do you want the learner to be navigated to another content slide to remediate, like for question slides, or do you accept another way? I am thinking about having a popup appear after one or more failed attempts, which explains? That would be a lot easier than having to navigate to a content slide and come back.

A lot can be done, but you’ll need to dive into advanced/shared actions and variables. Have a look at a related example where I show how to create a popup for quiz slides. It is a different use case but it could give you some ideas:

Thanks again.  In my dream scenario the learner is redirected to the part of the video demo we have created / or to the QRG document matching the assessment objective, and then sent back to the assessment to carry on.  I appreciate this may be beyond my skill set!  I will certainly review the link given and try a pop up in the meantime.  I am sure I will use it at some point so thank you for creating this resource.

You talk about a Video Demo? Is your project an interactive video, where the quiz slides are overlay slides? Or is it a normal cptx project, where you have the Video Demo on a slide?

Sorry for all those questions, it is not easy to understand the real goal of a question right away, and I want to be sure to give a helpful answer. For the Video Demo you need to use the bookmarks. Here is an example of an interactive video:

Besides the inbuilt features I added a menu on top of the video.

The video Demos have been made in Camtasia for this project and so I have little control over them.  Moving forward we could produce them in Captivate and add the knowledge check slides and bookmarks.  I think at this point I could come back and reframe the question and I am sure this will be possible.  I think you have been hugely helpful in directing me to what can be done and where I need to be headed to realise my ideas.

Not totally correct. You don’t need a mp4 produced with Video Demo to have an interactive video. Insert the video as slide video and it can be used as interactive video: you can add overlay slides, both content and KC slides. Have a look at this blog post

I suspect you are talking about the Remediation feature for quiz slides? Your terminology is a bit confusing: what do you mean by a ‘training video’? Is this a passive video embedded as video on one slide? That would be necessary for the inbuilt Remediation. You cannot point to a sequence of slides or to an external video or a video distributed over multiple slides.

Such a remediation feature is not available in software simulation, assessment/training mode. It is certainly possible to set this up, using shared actions (or eventual advanced actions) and variables. Sorry, I never wrote a blog so far for this situation.  I am just busy finalizing a software assessment for some Captivate features to publish here. But the content slide needed for remediation are not in the assessment, or I could try to figure out a workflow.
