First things first!
(1)

I have recently taken up a job as an advisor to an organization to help it develop e-learning for its employees. I will be involved more on content generation and to some extent on e-course development. As a newcomer and an apprentice in e-learning, can you veterans out there provide some insight on what are the first steps in this game? Your help and insight is appreciated.

It depends on what the expectations are. If you are designing from scratch, i.e. you are starting from a blank slate you may wish to begin by conducting a needs analysis. As an instructional designer I followed the ADDIE model of design and development. It looks something like this…

  1. Analysis (the needs analysis I just mentioned)
  2. Design (writing a storyboard for what you imagine that eLearning will look like)
  3. Development (actually building the prototype of the elearning for review and sign-off)
  4. Implementation (publishing the course and uploading it to your LMS, also marketing your elearning to the organization)
  5. Evaluation (run reports on the elearning to see how effective it is and possibly improve the training, start back at the beginning using continuous improvement methods).

If the expectation is that you are merely developing courses that are already designed for you, then you can skip item 1 and 2.
