New Captivate: Button States – Please Help
(4)

Hi team.

When I select my buttons (on a custom navigation page that I’ve built), I can see that “Visited” is an option, but it’s blanked out and can’t be selected. I cannot edit the design of the visited state nor trigger it to display the default when I do click the button in Preview. I’d like this custom navigation menu to show the sections they’ve been to so this would be exactly what I need if anyone can help.

This is indeed a very common workflow, such a menu. It is a breeze to realize this in Captivate Classic, because each multistate object has the option ‘Retain state on revisiting slide’ in its Properties inspector. That is valid both for custom and InBuilt states, with the exception of Rollover and Down which are linked to those particular status. In the new version you cannot add custom states anymore which is a shame but can be solved by using an image to trigger an interaction instead of a button. In the new version a button can NOT have a custom state. An image or an icon can have a custom state. When defining the interaction for the image/icon  the Next button in the  shows you that the option ‘Reset State on Slide Revisit’ is unchecked by default. It is the new terminology for the former ‘Retain state….’ in older versions.

Please try: avoid the buttons for a dashboard/menu until they have the possibility for custom states which you can control, and use another object as button. One of my first decisions when I tried the new version was to never use a button. This is one of my main reasons, because you have little control over them.

I’m doing a project with buttons made from images and I’ve selected “Reset state when revisiting slide”, however, this hasn’t worked to leave the button looking selected when I return to the slide. Do you know another way to do this in the new captivate?

You shouldn’t select that option. It is the opposite of what is available in Captivate Classic: ‘Retain state when revisiting slide’ which is by default unselected. Why the team has been doing now exactly the opposite,…. mystery … but as a trainer/professor I don’t like that at all.

This option seems to be new, I will test it out and revert.
