How do I reduce my file size in the new Captivate?
(2)

Hi Everyone,

I’m fairly new to Captivate and am using the new version (the one that’s trying to behave like Rise). My question is, how do I reduce my overall file size which is currently a massive 241 MB when zipped to upload as a SCORM? I have gone through the torturous process of compressing every individual image in the course and reincorporating them, which reduced the file from 547 MB originally to 241 MB. When I go through the tips in this link, they doesn’t seem to apply to the new version of Captivate.

Is there anything else I can do to reduce the file size? I’ve looked closely at Preferences and Properties but these don’t appear to give me any options to reduce the file size.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

As Lieve suggests, it’s just a matter of appropriately selecting formats, file sizes, and dimensions.

Here is an example. I searched for an image of people in a meeting on the Adobe Stock site and found an appropriate image. I downloaded this image and discovered it was 6720 x 4480, was 300 dpi, and came in about 10 MB. The project I’m using this image in is 1366 x 768, so there is no value in having an image the size I mentioned above. I used the image resizer in Microsoft Powertoys to resize this image to 1366 x 768, and I could probably reduce it further if the image isn’t spanning my full Captivate slide. Just that one action reduce the size of the file to 143 KB.

Performing similar optimization in Photoshop, I even got the image to 84 KB, and my 55-year-old eyes could not tell it apart from the original once imported into Captivate. Considering that 84 KB is not even 1 percent of 10 MB, optimizing your multimedia before adding it to your project is worth it. Don’t wait until you are ready to perform a final publish of your project. Please spend a few seconds before importing multimedia, preparing it as you develop.

Also, don’t forget to update Captivate to version 12.2 to allow you to click your File dropdown and select Remove Unused Items. This may not reduce your published project size but should lower your CPT file size.

You only talk about images? For Captivate Classic I would start by telling to replace bitmap images by SVGs whenever possible. However the use of SVGs has not at all improved in the New Captivate which I find weird since it ia creating only responsive projects. Do you have audio or video clips? Those items will increase the file size a lot more than the images.$, which you probably already have solved. I also miss the Project Library in this Captivate version because it would offer you more information about all the assets in your project. Indeed your resulting file size is big for a responsive project. I tried to keep that type of projects below 60MB in former versions and that was not problem.
