Duplicate a button on numerous slides
(7)

With Captivate 12.2 is there an easy way to duplicate a button and place on other cards. For example, if I want to put a home button on each slide, is there a simple way to do this? The only way I’ve found is to go to the button, copy interactions, go to another slide, and paste interaction (after adding a new button to that slide). But since I only want to use a home icon, I have to go in and make all of the changes. A very tedious task.

I went through all 99 slides and put a home button on each slide. Came back today and half of the slides had a broken image for the home icon. Now, I have to go over it again, one by one, and add the home icon. This version of Captivate was released too soon, more of a beta than a finished product.

You are entitled to use Captivte Classic on the same license. I keep to version 11.5.5.553 for all my jobs, because it is very stable, has less bugs but all the features I can use to save time, to reuse all my scripts (shared actions can be reused in each projects), libraries and create solid themes which allow to save lot of time.

Certainly! In Adobe Captivate 12.2, if you want to duplicate a button and place it on multiple slides (or “cards” as you referred to), there’s a more efficient method than the one you’re using. Instead of copying and pasting interactions for each slide, you can use the “Shared Actions” feature. This feature allows you to create an action (like navigating to a home slide) once and then apply it to buttons across different slides.

Here’s a simplified process:

  1. Create Your Button: Design your home button on one slide and adjust its appearance and actions as needed.
  2. Convert Actions to Shared Actions: Convert the button’s actions to a shared action. You can do this by selecting the button, going to the Actions tab, and choosing “Convert to Shared Action.”
  3. Apply Shared Actions: On each slide where you want the home button to appear, you can now place a new button and assign the shared action to it without having to redefine the actions each time.
  4. Use Object Styles: To streamline the process even further, define the button’s appearance using Object Styles. This way, when you create a new button on each slide, you can quickly apply the predefined style, which includes the home icon and any formatting.
  5. Advanced Interaction: For a more automated approach, especially in large projects, consider using the Advanced Interaction panel to manage and apply actions to multiple objects at once.

By using Shared Actions and Object Styles, you can significantly reduce the repetitive work of adding a home button to each slide. This method ensures consistency and efficiency, especially in larger eLearning projects.

Please do not give wrong answers like ChatGPT about the new version!

The All NEW version has NO advanced actions, NO shared actions and the amount of exposed useful system variables has decreased a lot. Moreover there are now only TEXT styles, no longer OBJECT styles.

If you are NOT using version 12, the quickest way to have buttons on each slide is to use shape buttons or images used as buttons on master slides, or timed for the rest of the project. But the NEW Captivate has no master slides anymore and you cannot time objects for multiples slides neither because of its focus on responsive projects with canned blocks.

I wished there was a real moderator who knows Captivate on this platform.

Thanks for your quick response. That was what I was afraid of. I’m finding version 12 to be taking steps backward. When creating a new app, I believe one of the things to keep in mind is that you want to add new features that enhance the product, not make easy tasks such as I mentioned above laborious, monotonous tasks that have to be repeated over and over again. I was completing a 99-slide project that I decided would best be suited if I allowed users to return home at any time. Now, I have to go one by one to complete this task.

You can guess that I completely agree with your viewpoint. It is clear that at this moment the new version is meant for a different audience, who only occasionally create a course. For professional developers or for teams in a company it is frustrating.

Not in version 12! Due to the fact that it can only create responsive projects and that the layout is always canned there is no way to repeat anything on all slides. I used to have my name as author on all slides, buttons with same functionality. That is a breeze in Captivate Classic especially on non-responsive project:  just put it on the main master slide. Even on the two previous workflows for responsive projects it can be done (Breakpoint views, Fluid Boxes). In version 12, you only have Copy/Paste. I used to label a concurrent tool as being the ‘Copy/Paste’ tool, now my preferred eLearning tool has become the same.

Please support my compleints about reducing the functionality of Captivate’s projects compared with before. Most of my consultacy jobs resulted in the creation of a solid Theme (which incluced master slides and styles) and one or more libraries to be used as external library with much used assets, including the reusable shared actions (which also could create variables automacally).
