Which Captivate is Better?

Hi there! I am a bit confused with the two versions of Adobe Captivate. Which one’s better? What’s the difference between the two? Is the older one for complex projects and the new one for simpler ones?

If you have worked on the previous one you know that its very robust, but at the same time, the workflows are a bit complex and take time to learn. That isn’t the case with the new Adobe Captivate. I found it very intuitive and easy to discover. The courses developed using the new one are by default responsive, and you have a lot of predesigned slide layouts and interactive widgets to choose from. The new version currently doesn’t support some features like PowerPoint import and VR projects that are present in the old one.

If you are looking at rapid responsive eLearning development using the templatized approach, then I think the new Adobe Captivate will be a better option.

The New one is missing a lot of features available in Captivate Classic. At this moment you can only create responsive projects by putting together canned slide templates and blocks. There are some design options but do not expect full customisability.

Some missing items:  question pools, project library and external libraries, roundtripping with other Adobe applications like Audition, Photoshop, Illustrator, Capture… Almost no possibility to integrate JavaScript for complicated projects. Lack of a lot of formerly exposed system variables. Deprecated and confusing themes. No longer using Advanced/Shared actions which allowed scripting situations without needing to learn rules and grammar of a real programming language. Group collaboration almost impossible where in companies work was distributed based on specific skills.

If you accept to learn two different sets of Terminology, use two User interfaces use both. If you are an occasional user and don’t mind creating always from scratch and using Copy/paste for reusability, go with the new version.  If you want to focus on engaging professional eLearning courses, at his moment keep to Captivate Classic. The New Captivate may improve but I don’t know within which time frame. My clients have requests which cannot be done with New Captivate.
