I am sorry to react in the subreddit (I had seen that article) because I think this comparison is skewed, because the New Captivate should at this moment be compared with Rise, not with Storyline. StoryLine can be compared with Captivate Classic. The result should in that case be very different.

I have never like Storyline for multiple reasons, but due to what I already mentioned above, I didn’t want to react. A real comparison can only be done when you have two experts in both applications, showing workflows and their differences in the two applications. In the past I have done that as Captivate expert, along with a real Lectora expert in a live and an online conference. The participants were very pleased, because it was up to them to judge which application was best suited for them. However Articulate never accepted that type of comparison…. which is part of their global attitude. I agree that their customer support is excellent, but everything is also ‘curated’, which I don’t like.

Marketing is also much better in the Articulate domain, which explains also a lot. You need to judge yourself what is best but of course the limited trial time is a hurdle.

Seeing as we are on the Adobe Captivate forum, you will likely get a slanted view.

Storyline 360 is an excellent product. Its responsive design is more of a player that adjusts the player to fit any screen, but the content is not truly responsive. Adobe Captivate has offered true responsive design solutions since version 8. They have worked hard to make these solutions easy to use, especially with the release of the All-New Adobe Captivate.

I suspect that Articulate 360 is used by more users in North America. Adobe doesn’t publish what percentage of its market share it has, but I guess it is the world’s second-most used product.

Adobe Captivate has a reputation for being more difficult to use, but I believe that is a myth perpetuated by those who started using Storyline first. I have been using the All New Adobe Captivate for about a year, and I know the software well. It wasn’t hard to learn.

The bottom line is that Adobe Captivate costs a little more than $400 per year, while Storyline 360 is well over $1000 per year. If you are a freelancer like me or have a limited budget, Adobe Captivate starts to look very appealing.
